Hi guys,
I have a Sport II that came equipped with a red/ green dot. I am trying to find iron sights as back up but have been having all kinds of trouble due to the gas block. Apparently nothing will work short of possibly offset sights which doesn't thrill me.
I know you can install a red dot on a Sport II that came with iron sights. Why you can't install iron with red dot sights escapes me and seems ridiculous.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Which version do you have the one with the A-2 or the picatinny rail block?

Picatinny with 2 slots in front. Rifle came with red dot only. Told by S&W could not install iron due to the gas block...? Also told by a Magpul the same thing. Why have the rail at all then?

I don't have a S&W Sport ll, but if it has a gas block with a Picatinny rail on top, there should be no reason you cant install a set of pop up sights. I know DPMS uses a gas block on some models that is a little lower in height than standard, and if that is the case with the S&W, there are front folding sights that are a little taller to compensate for the height difference.

I have friends who got the Sport2 with the A2 sight. They had no trouble installing a red dot. Apparently the same is not true if bought with a red dot and wanting to install iron. Believe me, not arguing. Just repeating what S&W and Magpul told me.

You can install sights, just not recommended to install the polymer Magpul sights. Metal sights on the rail of the gas block are not an issue. You will need to make sure that the rail height on the gas block is the same as the upper. If the same, you would order the same plane sights. If the height is different, you would have to order sights that take that difference into consideration. I think S&W uses same height so it shouldn't be an issue.

Cyphertext is correct. The polymer Magpul front sight is too long for the gas block rail. That's why I chose the Tacticon. I have a Magpul m-lock hand guard, carbine length, and it is cut out around the gas block. The folding sights co-witness with the red dot giving me a clear picture.

I'm not able to put up a photo of my basic AR in a configuration like the sport II but I'm sure there are sights that will fit on the block.
Maybe the polymer sights won't fit because they're to long but Troy industry battle sight will fit, they ain't cheap but they will work.
I'll post a photo tomorrow.

This gas block isn't exactly like the one S&W uses but close enough.
The block is a 3 slot but you can see the sight would fit on a 2 slot just the same.
The sights are Troy Industry battle sights in the H&K style.

The issue with the plastic Magpul folding front sight isn't the height, its the material it is made out of. The gas block gets too hot for plastic. They do fine on railed fore ends.

I see it the same way as Fishinfool. Buy sights that are made of metal and not plastic as Magpul are. You can find them on line. Just make sure they are metal. Iron or ghost sites refer to the type of sight not what they are made of.
