Instead of ammo I'm switching to Bourbon.

Check out Angel’s Envy sometime. It is aged in port wine casks and picks up a hint of fruitiness and brandy. A nice but subtle change of taste.
 
I like bourbons but am particularly fond of rye. Bulleit frontier bourbon is tasty and their 95 rye is my go to for Manhattans. Real Manhattans are made with rye. Ryes are experiencing a resurgence in popularity, there are some very good ones out now but prices are rising fast. Dickel's rye is still a bargain at under 20 bucks. Knob Creek's is tasty but overpriced. Utah, yes Utah is producing some fine rye whiskey, High West Distillery in Park City has several varieties including a silver one.
I admit I don't get Tenn. whiskey at all. Never tasted one I really like. Buddy of mine carries out his precious bottle of Gentleman Jack like a priest carrying the communion host or something.
The very last of the last of the last of the old AH Hirsch is now under the control of and being bottled by Anchor Distilling in SF. I recommend checking out Anchor's website. They are an offshoot of the beer company. One of their labels, Old Potrero, has three different ryes all single malt pure ryes with no pig feed added. Copper pot stilled and aged in different ways. Bottled at barrel proof!

I'm going for both. What bourbons are you after? Luckily a buddy bought me a bottle of Old Rip Van Winkle before it got stupid expensive. I'm stalking a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle, it is supposed to be released at one liquor store in my area in November.


They have waiting lists at local stores for some Pappy.
 
I collect Scotch, only problem is my collection is housed in my belly.

What on earth are you accusing me of???? Ive never mixed a whiskey one time with anything! That is sacrilege! Straight whiskey in the proper glass is the only way to drink it.
Then brother your not drinkin' the right Tennessee Whisky if you find it inferior to Kentucky bourbons, Leave Jack Daniels to the tourists.

I too believe in the proper glass, mines called a "Texas jigger"
Things are bigger in Texas you know. It is a Kentucky bourbon glass so I am guilty of using Kentucky glassware.

Save yourself some money. Rip Van Winkle is distilled by Buffalo Trace. So is Benchmark 8... Taste is not a matter of money.
 
My "standard occasion" drink is Pendleton Canadian whiskey. I'm still exploring for my preferred "special occasion" bourbon.

If you like Rye, check out Templeton Rye. You are spot on with High West. They have some really good stuff. Have you tried their barreled Manhattan?

I think after Old Overcoat Templeton or maybe Rittenhouse was the first good rye I tried, and I still like it. Hard to find in my area. I haven't tried the HW barreled manhattan. Tasty? I'm kindly picky about my mannys.:rolleyes:

The barreled Manahttan is tasty but not a substitute for one properly made with good ingredients. It would be handy to take camping or somewhere where it may be a hassle to lug around a couple of bottles and cherries. I bought it as a novelty and wasn't displeased. I do not keep it on hand though.
 
This is fantastic stuff. Richer and fuller than the already great #12. There is also a 14 y.o. George Dickel that is even harder to find.

I just cracked mine open yesterday to sip while working the crossword puzzle. Mrs. Zip was put off by the stronger alcohol, 103 proof, but that wasn't an issue for me. You definitely know you're drinking a man's bourbon though.
 
I just return from a trip to North Carolina with a stop at the Buffalo Trace distillery. I picked up a bottle of Eagle Rare 10 year old bourbon. I have not opened it yet still have 6 other bourbons opened, Single Barrel 9 year old Knob Creek, Knob Creek Rye, Booker Single barrel 8 year old, 7 year old Bakers, Evan Williams 10 old Single barrel vintage, an a bottle Woodford Reserve. We also stopped in Shelbyville Ky at a liquor ware house I found a bottle of Willet bourbon 10 year old single barrel.

I have been reading about Tennessee distillers trying to get a law passed to define just what Tennessee Whisky is. and what is in there Whisky to be called Tennessee; the whisky must to aged in Tennessee. Some Tennessee whiskey is aged at Haven Hill in Kentucky. And that the barrels used to age whisky are to be new white oak. I was told , but don't know how true it is but Jack Daniels uses used barrels from one of the Kentucky distillers. Maybe Haven Hill. Haven Hill is a major commemorate the produces many different alcohol beverages and may own Jack Daniels

I find I like the bourbon's that use a wheat in the mash bill, wheat is just a bit smoother and adds a bit sweetness. Rye in the mash bill is harsher and adds a pepper finish.
