I am interested in a model 625 and need advice. I have a line on a Jerry Muculek model and seek opinions on it. Should I buy it or wait until I can find a good pre-lock version?

That's up to you. The lock is no worry to me on a gun like the JM model, and I have never heard anyone complaining about those guns are far as accuracy is concerned.

I would be more concerned about the barrel length, but it is just personal preference, in my case. I have an older model with 5-inch barrel that I was lucky to buy from a forum member here. I really like it, but if you are using the gun for competitive shooting a 5-inch barrel is no longer legal in some of the shooting games. The 4-inch barrel of the JM model doesn't have that problem.

If I found a good price on a JM and was OK with the 4-inch barrel, I would have a hard time passing it up. If you can't tolerate the lock, it is easily disabled.

I've had my model 625 JM for about 3 years and it's one of my favorite guns. It has the "dreaded lock" which I have not had a single problem with. It has had more than 1,500 rounds fired with no problem. It is also one of most accurate handguns I own. I think you would be well pleased with the gun lock or no lock.

As stated previously it is a matter of preference. I have the 625 JM and absolutely love it. Long story short I had one previously and regretted parting with it. When looking for and older 625 with the 5' barrel, I found this one and sent it to the factory for the Master Revolver Action Package and I'll never part with this one.

Like everyone else I think it's a matter of what you like. I personally don't care for the stocks on the JM but thats EASILY fixed with a set of Ahrends. All the fuss and ranting about the lock is really just a tempest in a teapot. I've fired thousands of rounds through my Model 21 (44 special) without ANY problems.

Was at the range with a 625 JM this morning testing loads. It's the best 625 I've had. (Including hammer mounted and frame mounted firing pin [w/o lock] variations.)

Thanks for the feedback guys. It is always good to get the opinions of those with first hand experience.

I know what you mean. I like the looks of the wood grips, but not the feel when shooting, so I put on a pair of the Pachmyar Decelerators.

I personally would not pass up a 625JM. I have a 4 inch 625-8 and it is hands down the best shooting (and accurate) handgun I have ever owned. I will never sell it. The JM model has the "trigger job" done to it to facilitate quicker double action fire. With that being said, I have also read that the JM model is recommended to be loaded with ammo which has federal primers. This is due to the lighter hammer strike. I would still get it any day of the week, and would have gotten the JM if they had one when I bought mine.

This is not my experience with my JM model. It has shot thousands of rounds that I have reloaded using Federal, Remmington, CCI and Winchester primers without any light strike problem. I do agree with you I love it and will never sell it. Actually I can't imagine selling any of my Smiths. Jim.
