Seems to me we have better things to be concerned about than a meaningless statistic.

I wouldn't say it's meaningless. Population studies are used to distribute Federal funds and services. Like where to build a V.A. hospital. Also, it affects how many Representatives each state has and therefore it's electoral college votes. Seems pretty meaningful to me.
