Just picked up a S&W 360J in decent condition...
BUT...hate that internal lock...
Question...
When installing the lock delete plug on a hammered J Frame, does the lock flag HAVE to be removed?
That would leave an extra space beside the hammer to just gather debris....
Some experienced advice appreciated...
Thanks...

That's one of the objections I have to the lock.
Even removing it still leaves that space where debris can get inside.

Someone will probably come along shortly and say "leave the flag, but file down the nub" or some other method that will render the lock still installed but inoperable, or worse, non-working, but maintaining the appearance of working.

If you don't want the lock, REMOVE IT in its entirety. You won't own your gun forever (think about it) and the next owner may assume the lock works, especially if the lock barrel turns and the flag goes up.

I know that wasn't the OP's question, anyways...

I wouldn't worry about the gap adding any grit/grime issues.

Do the locks have problems? Are there issues with them?

Why would someone want to remove it?

Just curious.

There are anecdotal reports of them engaging due to recoil - not good if you are in a gun fight. Others of us just hate the fact they are forced on us and want to remove them as a protest. Some don't like the looks.

Heavy recoil in a light gun a possibility to engage lock.

My range guns, don't care.

J frame magnum carry gun.. I pull the flag. Been that way for years and no debris has ever gotten in the action.
