I was looking at the bench blocks shown on various web sites for working on firearms and such. Since I have been a tinkerer since shortly after birth, I am thinking of buying one. No big deal, I have seen and used bench blocks for many years in the machine shop. They were made from tool steel, hardened and ground, and were and still are, a nice addition to a work bench. Since I am old and grouchy sometimes, (always old), I don't need a fine steel one, a plastic one will do.

I looked on the Midway site, at a nice one, then made the mistake of reading the reviews. All of them were positive, except the first two geniuses that criticized them because they are obviously built for 1911's and shouldn't be called universal and the holes didn't fit a AR frame. They have been built like that since the beginning of time, almost, and are not slanted toward anything!

Rant over, now I'll go take my meds. Just kidding about the meds.

Two things on my bench that I can't live without....

First is a 4" piece of 2x4. Greta for proping things into a useful angle and a great backstop for pounding.

The other is a hockey puck with a 1/2" hole drilled in it. Supports your work with out marring the finish.

Best of all they are both cheap!

2X4 check. Not much use for hockey pucks around here.

That's why I'd rather read reviews than just see a rating like 'four stars'. Nearly every product has one or two people that really bought the wrong thing, so they knock the product about not fitting their needs.

With these I usually see a lot of four and five star ratings, and one or two one star ratings that I usually discount.

PS. If you don't have the right holes, a plastic block can be drilled to suit.
