IPSC Weapon

In 1996 I started out with a Colt 1911 Enhanced that I worked over with some machine shop buddies of mine. I got to C class quick and started taking it serious so I moved up to an SVI .40 with the full dustcover and used that to get to A class limited.

Little while later I switched to Open and ran a Caspian .38 Super. Eventually I had to move for work and my shooting dropped way off and so I sold all my competition stuff. Few times a year I would get out and run production with either an XD in 9mm or a Glock.

One thing I learned over the years is don't re-invent the wheel. For production class get a Glock/XD, kydex holster, good belt, six to eight mags and all the ammo you can possibly afford. For limited buy an STI .40 in the configuration you like (long dustcover/ standard dustcover whatever) If you go Open you are lost anyway so just enjoy the journey.

When I started IPSC to really have any shot at being competitive you had to load your own ammo and spend some real time on the gun. I did all that in spades and eventually burned out. Now I have just as much fun with a stock 9mm and some kydex as I did with a .38 Super and all the space gear.

I rarely shoot matches anymore because I find that as I get older my tolerance for standing around for four to five hours to shoot 100 rounds over four or five stages as reached a low point. IPSC is still in my heart though. You wont find a better community of people or a better way to improve your gun handling skills.

The best reference for all things IPSC/USPSA/3 Gun is here Brian Enos's Forums... Maku mozo!

I tell everyone now to just go get a plastic gun and have a blast.

Go to the uSPSA website and you can find out the various classes in which you can compete - including reveolver and several classes using semi auto's. Revolvers are limited to 6 shots before reload unless you want to shoot them in Production class vs the Glock, S&W M&P's etc.

I think I classified B in Limited, Limited 10 and Production with the same Glock 21. I used the same IDPA legal holster and magazine pouches for all divisions. Some of the time I used my Bar-Sto barrel but now I believe the tight chamber is undesirable and I'd just stick with the factory barrel, even for lead. The 21 is very versatile and accomplishes practically everything.

I'm also fond of my Glock 35 but I just noticed that you mean IPSC and not USPSA. I don't think the Glock 34 and 35 are legal for IPSC Production.

I have a couple of 625s that I've used in Revolver, also using street gear and springs stiff enough to fire all brands of primers. I'm a B shooter here too.

All my match guns are also my carry guns. Nothing match only here.

Mike Seeklander's book, "Your Competetion Handgun Training Program" suggests that you start with something simple and reliable, a good holster, and decent magazine pouches. Then put your effort into training. I shot IDPA about 12 years ago using the G21 I carried on a daily basis in a pancake thumb break holster. I shot the qualifier first thing and scored sharpshooter. As I got into the competetion thing, I decided I needed to get a little fancier to be faster and went to a 9mm. On the qualifier I ran slower. Not sure that the 9mm had anything to do with it, other than I went from a pistol I carried every day to a pistol that I didn't. I've been thinking about getting back into it, either IDPA or USPSA, and will probably use my daily carry, an M&P 45.
