I mounted a strike eagle on an M&P15. I had to remove the rear MBUS. I WAS IN THE PROCESS of removing the front sight by tapping on the two front sight tapers, when i noticed where the gas tube on the rifle was headed-into the front sight—-Gas block?
I stopped.I only see a shadow of the front sight when looking through the rifle scope but Should I figure out a way to remove this?
TIA

FSB is also used for the gas tube.

You can remove the upper part via cutting.

You can replace with an alternative low - profile gas block.

You can leave as is and see the shadowing / no shadowing depending on magnification.

You can increase height of optic with riser / mount.

Your carbine so it is your choice . I can tell you what I would do as I have no back up sights on our 3 AR's but have a scope on a QD mount on my AR15 but I do keep an older Primary arm MD-ADS dot optic with a QD base I can swap to in one minute if really needed and still hold a good enough zero out to 100 yards for one shot hunting need ! My primary deep woods hunting rifle is a 1973 rem 788 and it still runs the original burris 2.5-10x40 scope on it and it has not had a easy life but always hold zero so open sights where never used on it.

I found the dot optic I have as a back up to be a solid quick change set up if ever needed and capable of maintaining a good enough zero at 100 yards , say with in 2.5" . Now you have to decide if that front sight is OK at different power levels or will you replaced with a different gas block style ???

Thanks guys… i have seen some but butcher jobs on this A2 front sight with and angle grinder- no thanks…. I think the low profile gas block solution would be easiest? Is that accurate? I asked here because It is an M&P15 so a compatible gas block so i can remove the front sight would be good. Barrel diameter and fit? Are gas blocks universal? Access Denied

Is this an easy task?

Removing the FSB taper pins can be quite difficult and with that FSB likely goes your upper handguard retaining cap.

Gas blocks are not universal and there are a variety of barrel diameters, heights, and attachment methods (taper pins or set screws). So, obviously you would need to source something that would fit and function on your rifle.

As was stated above, likely the easiest pathway for you would be to put a riser under your optic.

thank you. I have a cantilever mount with a 2” offset, i can’t imagine how much higher the scope would sit.

Upper guard retaining cap :(

Adding a Fortis 12" REV rail or equivalent would not be cheap and I would still have to resolve the gas block issue.

I couldn’t find a gas block with a hand guard retaining cap. I have a short magpul hand guard.

I could easily cut that front sight off but i would feel dirty doing it.

Headache.

Leave it as is. Fixed front sight bases are great to have. If the shadow starts to bother you, just build a better upper for your lpvo!

This. With the rail you mentioned and a gas block, you're looking at close to $250. PSA sells uppers for about $350 all day long.

Not only that, if you don't mess with the original upper, it can go back to stock easily. Sometimes easier to sell a branded rifle than one made from parts. Regardless of the quality of those parts. If you're thinking of selling it ever, that could be something to think about.

Those pins on an MP-15 are in there super tight. It’ll take a big hammer, professional quality punch, and a buddy to get them out so you can remove the A frame front sight. The front sight base is a fitted piece. Once that’s gone, you’ll need a free floating hand guard. An adjustable gas block is a worthy replacement for the factory sight.

If you had a nice Colt LE6920, I wouldn’t touch it. Anything but a Colt is fair game to me. I’ve cut, ground/filed a few front sight bases in the past. They look good. That metal takes cold blue we’ll.

There’s no real wrong answer.

It is a SIMPLE job; it is NOT always an EASY job. Find a good manual and watch some good videos before you set about this job. It CAN be screwed up...
