Is 45 super worth it?

Worth what?

You get a few hundred more fps velocity and some more energy downrange.

You also get more recoil, blast, etc., and it costs some to upgrade your pistol.

You have to decide whether the downrange improvement is worth the expense, recoil, blast, and possible wear on your pistol.

Wow!

I must be getting old - I have not heard of the .45 Super cartridge until now.

Can't give you an honest answer because i am not knowledgeable about the specifications of this cartridge. I would like to learn more about it of you could post some spec's.

I do own a .38 Super conversion kit for my WWll era 1911 though. I've shot a few boxes of .38 super through it and while it is a decent performer, I'd still prefer the.45 acp over it. Getting .38 Super ammo is also a p.i.t.a. and it's one caliber that I do not reload and have no intention to.

If you like loud, hard kicking pistols that throw expensive brass a long distance, it is worth it.

I have loaded some .45 Supers in my younger days, not so much the last few years. I guess I am getting old.

It works, and the conversion is quite simple. Brass is expensive though. Then there is the question of what you are going to shoot with it. It may drive hollow point bullets too fast to perform properly, and there are very few animals I would shoot with a pistol that require the kind of penetration a solid bullet provides.

Maybe after it cools up I will load up some more. It is fun, and you can always go back to shooting .45 ACP, with no problems.

All it takes to convert a 1911 to .45 Super is an $8, 24 pound recoil spring and the right brass, readily available from Star-Line. It's main use was for hunting with a semi-auto in states that had a specific energy floor at 100 yards that the cartridge met.

You could also have bought the Springfield Longslide V-16 which was specifically made for the .45 Super, although the replacement spring was a much cheaper way. The bottom gun here is a V-16:

I have found all of the Springfield Longslides to be quite accurate, but the Trophy Match (top) is particularly so.

In a word..........NO! I see no advantage with the 45 Super. If I want more I put down the 45 ACP and grab the 44 Mag. and if that doesnt do the trick I put the 44 away and grab the 50 AE, if that still doesnt scratch my itch I put the Desert Eagle away and grab the 5OO S&W. By the time Im done, well Im good for a couple days. Its your money, as well as your itch, go get it scratched and if you dont like it sell it and buy a bigger gun, Have fun.

No, buy a 10mm the are virtually identical and the 10mm offers more ammo choices etc.
