Is $700 an OK price for this 6" M&P .38?

Probably a good decision to not buy, I do not know what the California Premium is on these, but that would be high here, my LGS has some from the late forties or early fifties perhaps in the same condition with worn finish and good mechanical workings and bore for around $350.

I have a hankerin' for a 6" M&P/pre Model 10/Model 10 .38 Special and found one that looks like this 1946 version (picture found online). Ii has the same hammer and stocks as this gun and a better finish but still not minty. Based on this less than great description and photo of it, in your opinions is the $700 price tag about right, decent, or too much? Thanks in advance, compadres.

As a shooter about $2-300 high. If it has something that puts it in the collector area then that may be a good price. Depends on what you are buying it for.

Speaking of Model 10s, this one is coming up at auction and it has the micro-click adjustable rear sights and Patridge front. Wasn't aware there was a 'target' Model 10 or I just don't see them. Listed as mid 50s time period, serial #K1005XX. Looks very nice.

As usual prices continue to shock me. Guess I'm gettin old but everything seems overpriced!

It isn't a "Model 10" at all, and no, the M&P after WWII didn't have target sights (except for a very few that were special ordered for export).

Your picture shows a K-38 Masterpiece, which would later become the Model 14. That one almost certainly shipped in 1951. It is a very nice example of the K-38 that appears to have its original Magna stocks.

Thank you and I was thinking the same but wasn't sure. Totally mislabeled and I may not alert them.
This is the description. They even show it as modern when its clearly C&R.

Make: Smith & Wesson
Model: 10
Serial # - Firearms: K100591
Caliber: .38 Special
Barrel Length: 6
Low Estimate: 400
High Estimate: 500
Factory matte blue finish. Partridge front sight. Micro click adjustable rear. Dating mid to late 1950s. Pre Model 15. Very good condition. (MODERN\PPT)

Weird, James. They call it a "Model 10" and then later, a "Pre-Model 15." It is neither. Obviously, they don't have a clue about S&W revolvers. At $500, I'd buy it so fast it would make their heads spin. :)

If you at set on getting a collectible condition gun, then don't settle for less than that.
But realize the price of that will be up there unless you stumble across one that the owner doesn't realize current values. It does happen of course, but it can take a long time searching.
Depends on if you just love the thrill of the hunt and search or actually would like the gun in your hands before you leave here.

If the latter, then plan on paying the current value or close to it and move on. It will seem like a great buy in a couple yrs.

If slight wear and a shooter grade is more your style, then the field is wide open. Prices are easier on the wallet and they shoot just as well as the Prom Queens.
Shouldn't be too hard to find what you want unless you start narrowing things down by mfg yrs, ser# range, birth yr gun,,things like that.

Given today's prices not crazy high.

I own s/n S944068 and it shipped Nov 1947. I paid $375 for it in 2017.
Someone has messed with the front sight and sanded off the checkerboard from the original stocks. No box. It is a good shooter but not as nice as what you are describing.

I'm guessing this is like the box it shipped in but it is not the original box.

cute dark skin boys
Well, yesterday at a gun show I saw a 5" version of the gun pictured here for $495. But I wanted a 6". th same people also had an 8 3/8" Model 14 with presentation grips and I bought it for $750. While I was filling out the paperwork my buddy bought the 5" M&P after I told him the practical advice JP@AK said here in post #7. So I'm pleased with Model 14 seen in the link below, and my friend has a classic M&P.

My first Model 14. I think it's beautiful.

And they also call the front sight "Partridge". If there is little interest in it because of the improper description, I may certainly bid.
