I have a 640-1 357,is it dumb to carry this revolver with 38spl +P in it.

My thoughts are you should carry a load that you know prints close to the sights, can practice with regularly, and does not intimidate you into flinching when you shoot it. If for you that is a good .38 Special + P load, that is what you should use. If the "magnum-itis" simply won't go away, many recommend the Speer .357 Short Barrel load. Interested to see what others think.

If I follow your question correctly, I'd venture to say more people carry their steel j frames with .38s in them than .357s.

I carry +P's in my 640-1, my model 12-4 and my 442. Works for me.

Most assuredly dumb. Send the gun to me. I'll carry it with .357's.

My .357's all get fed .38's much more often than .357's. They don't mind, and my palms, wrists, and elbows are much happier as well.

My Mustang GT will run 140 mph, but it usually putts around at about 50 mph. My F-250 Diesel will pull 13,000 lbs, but it's usually empty.

The capability is there, you just don't need it all the time. As said above, I would much prefer carrying an accurate, shootable load that is easy to hit with than a hand-cannon that hurts on both ends and doesn't shoot to point of aim.

It would be dumb to carry it unloaded. You might as well carry a rock. +Ps are fine.

+P's are fine. Two that come to mind are Speer Gold Dot 135 HP's and that old stand-by 158 LHP's commonly known as the FBI load. Magnums become problematic for the follow-up shot. Bigger stocks are needed that support all the fingers on the dominant hand. That makes the piece bigger and no longer a pocket gun. Go with what youi shoot best.

Shoot the ammo that YOU believe in. Shooting accurately is about 60% mental and 40% physical. As stated before, shot placement is everything. Put +Ps where they should go and you will be fine. ..... Big Cholla

I don't shoot 50 rounds of 357 per year, all I shoot is 32 long, 38spl,and 22 along with some 9mm and 38 super.

Back on point: I use 38’s and 38+P’s in my 640-3 exclusively. I got rid of my alloy j-frame because I didn’t much care for its construction or lightness when shooting. As for my preferred 640, I never had any intention to shoot magnums from my aging hands anymore, but I do very much prefer the margin of durability and stability of the heavier frame. Granted, I’ve had mine tweaked a bit, but still ~

Carry Loads:

• Hordnady 110gr FTX CD .38
• Hordnady 110gr FTX CD .38+P
• Gold Dot 135gr .38+P
