Is model 28 an N frame?

While looking for more revolves to buy, I came across a graphic that presents the various Smith and Wesson revolvers by Frame..

I have a model 28, and it sure doesn't look like an N frame.

The new release of the model 27 is an N frame.

Will someone be so kind as to enlighten me as to the explanation for my 28 not being an N frame and the chart that shows it as an N frame?

This is the sort of quandary that I try to resolve at 0300 hrs

Edit: I am wrong. I based this on the size of the grips.

Yes sir 28’s are N frames

I thought the 28 and the 27 were the same gun with the 28 has cosmetic changes.

Even so, the 28 is shown as an N frame and mine is not an frame.

Edit: my conclusion was wrong. I based this assessment on the grips.

What makes you say it doesn't look like an N-Frame?

Does somebody here have a picture comparing J-, K-, and N-Frames?

My 28 has smaller grips than my 327, a lot smaller.

So, I thought it was built on a smaller frame.

I stand corrected, although still not understanding why they put such small grips on an N frame

Yes - they have put magnas on your N Frame. Compared to the target stocks you normally see. But, indeed it is an N frame.

I've always thought that Magnas look out of proportion on an N-Frame, but that is what they were usually sold with. Adding a Tyler T-Grip as pictured below ameliorates that situation, not to mention aids greatly in shootability, at least for me. Of course if I wanted to go all the way I could put the Target Stocks (foreground of the picture) on it.

I can't answer the why but a lot of them came that way. I have a 1955 pre-27 5 inch with magnas numbered to the gun and the very first S&W I ever bought was a 8 3/8 27-2 in 1974 which also came with magnas; and have seen many others. Same story with 28s.

When I saw the model 28 along side of a 29 I realized how out of place the magnas seemed. I did have one 28 that came with target stocks but you don't see that often.

You have to realize the 28 was made as a base model with no frills.

One of my m28’s has magnas. My new m58 came with magnas too. The magnas feel good in my hands too. The s&w combat stocks look better.

Personally, I absolutely love N frames but much prefer magnas and a grip adapter to any other grip unless I am shooting full tilt 44 Mag.

Here's my daily CCW:

Here's another gun I carry frequently after a factory reblue:

I flirted with this but recently got a set of Altamont cokes for it:

This one will get carried some once I ops test it:

The Model 28 Highway Patrolman frequently shipped with Magna stocks. I've owned a bunch of them over the past 4 dozen years in both barrel lengths and all of them I've owned came with Magna stocks, including the first 4" I bought new in the early 1970s.

I also have an ANIB 5" Model 27-2 that came with Magna stocks, pictured below. It isn't uncommon at all.

BigBill mentioned the Model 58. At least the 4" variant came with Magna stocks and I seem to remember they had rounded bottoms like the K frame PC Magna stocks. Can anyone clarify that? The only .41 I have now has the longer barrel and came with Targets.

Jack, I have a set of model 58 N frame PC magnas on my model 28. I have the original issue magnas as well, but prefer these with a Tyler T Grip!!
