I have a SW40VE and need to make sure it is built to fire the Federal Guard Dog Expanding Full Metal Jacket
Bullet Weight: 135 GR
Muzzle Energy: 432 ft lbs
Muzzle Velocity: 1200 fps

I have about 500 rounds saved up, and figured I better check with S&W before I start putting those rounds down range in that pistol.

Anyone, please advise. Thanks. //Tom

I don't see why it wouldn't. As long as it cycles. I've got the same ammo for my sd9ve....haven't shot any of it because it's my home defense round

Yes. There isn't much made in 9 that would be dangerous. If it is it's most likely imported and mentioned for something other than handguns....but even then it's not dangerous, just more wear

As far as Guard Dog....there isn't anything extraordinary about it. Those numbers are typical for most 115 - 124gr self defense ammo

His gun is a .40 s&w but the same applies. The 9 mm version of guard dog is 105 grain I believe....so it's a lighter load than range ammo.

Thanks for that. I apparently fail at reading comprehension!

I guess I was stuck on the 135gr. Or ????

I fail at more than that, so you are good in my book.

Has anyone ever fired Guard Dog 135gr ammo through their SW40VE pistol? It has a muzzle velocity of 1200fps pushing a much longer bullet than a standard 135gr HP bullet. The deeper the bullet is in the case, the greater the pressure it creates; thus, the firearm firing it needs to be built to handle higher pressure loads like +P ammo for .38 Special guns.

How is 135 longer than 135? Weight is weight, if it's longer it will weigh more. The only way for a caliber to get heavier is to go longer. Can't go wider or it won't be the same caliber. Typical 40s&w is 155, 165 and 180gr so they are all much longer and all shoot fine in any 40 cal handgun.

To be honest there is nothing special about the bulldog. There are better and proven rounds

If you were not going to believe the answer you were given the first time you asked the question, then why did you even ask?

Let me explain the most basic concept of U.S.made firearms and ammunition. For the most part this applies to firearms manufactured anywhere in the World and imported to the United States, but I won't try to confuse you with more than one concept at a time.

There is an organization known as the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute. All U.S. firearms and ammunition manufacturers Are members of SAAMI. This organization sets voluntary standards for compliance of all manufacturers. It establishes testing standards and pressure standards for both ammunition manufacturers and, basically, all manufacturers agree to maintain these standards in production. What this means is ALL SAAMI Compliant ammunition is safe to fire in ANY SAAMI Compliant firearm for which that ammunition is intended to be used in and is so marked. All you need to know is read the box. All U.S. Manufactured ammunition will be certified on the box as being SAAMI Compliant.

You are trying to over-think a subject about which you obviously have very little knowledge, this doesn't work.

Here's an example.

Speer gold dot. A very good and proven performer for law enforcement has a 165gr doing 1150 fps and has 484ft-lbs of energy.

That's heavier, and more energy than the bulldog and only 50fps slower

Speer gold dot 155gr has 1200fps and 492ft-lbs of energy.

Again....longer and heavier than the 135gr bulldog and more energy

The bulldog I guess is kinda. It's really meant to act more like a hollow point in guns that don't cycle hollow points too good. Usually old(er) 1911 and HiPower. Those guns from the 80s and earlier were never made to cycle the wider hollow point ammo. Or states that don't allow hollow point ammo

I've put the exact rounds through my SD40VE, with no visible difference between most range-loads. Sorry if the topic digressed.
