Is there a difference in grip size 4003/1066?

I'm looking into buying a 4003 and do not have one locally that I can handle. I'm curious does the grip differ much in size between it and the 1066? I thought about getting a 4013 or cs40 but the 4003 is priced at $350 and seems like it would work. It's the non-tactical model.

I want to take my 1066 out of my daily ccw routine and use something that would I would be less worried about in case the gun is held in police custody for any chance that I may be forced to use it on somebody.

Yes, it quite different. The 4003 is an alloy framed version of the 4006, which is a wider double stack magazine grip frame, and the 1066/4566 are a single stack magazine.

But depending on your hand size, the increased girth of the 4003 may not be an issue, but it sure won't be what you're used to with the thinner 1066.

I can relate to your concern... it took me forever to finally acquire a 1066 and I would hate to lose it too.

And welcome to the forum, always glad to have another 3rd Gen fan come aboard!

With the factory grips on both yes the 4003 is going to be a little thicker but not that dramatically.
I own a 1066 with the rubber Houge and also a 4043 with the factory grips. There's not much difference in grip thickness between the 2 at all with the slightly thicker Houge on the 1066. The up side is they are so close to the same size that the same holsters work well for both.
I carry the 4043 ( pretty much just a DAO version of the 4003 you are looking at) most of the time instead of the 1066 for exactly the same reason you were talking here and am quite comfortable and happy with that set up.
The 4043 is very accurate has a higher mag capacity and with the aluminum frame ( the 4003 is also an aluminum frame pistol)is much lighter than the all steel 1066 so those are +'s also.
i would buy the 4003 if it's in nice shape.
Word of advice would be to keep a good recoil spring in the aluminum frame 3rd gens to help protect that aluminum frame.
I love my 4043 and would not hesitate to pick up a 4003 at the right price.

I find the grip to be substantially different between the 45/10mm frames and 9mm/40 frames. As you know, the 1066 is a very slim gun. The 9mm/40 sized grip will be noticeably fatter, but a bit shorter front to back. (at least it feels shorter to me) I really like the arched (palm swell) grip on my 4006.

If you can snag a 4003, go for it! I don't think you'd be disappointed.

I agree. I have a 4006 & 1076, both with Hogues. The 4006 feels "rounder" & is more of a hand full, & I have pretty large hands. I think the Hogues on the 4006 added to the difference, but I like the soft grips.

True with the factory grips but I have a set of the thick rubber Houges on the 1066 and the stock factory hard plastic on the 4043. With that set up they feel really more similar than you might think.
Bottom line the 40 double stack does not feel like a 2x4 in your hand the way some double stacks do. If you like the 1066 you should be fine with the 4003.
