A friend of mine just gave me this 3" 629-2. He bought it used many years ago from a local gun shop, so it did not have a box or any paperwork. The grips are Pachmayrs, so I am not sure what originally came on this model.

It has a full lug barrel and an unfluted cylinder. I thought it was a "Trail Boss", but all the photos that I have been able to find all show a lighter barrel profile with either a fluted or unfluted cylinder and a red ramp front sight.

I am wondering if this might be a Lew Horton special?

Nope, not a Trail Boss. I had one just like it I traded a Kimber for. Mine was not Lew Horton but a beautiful gun none the less.

Yours is more than likely a Classic Hunter product code 103650. The book says 3200 produced in Sept of 1989. These were 3" non fluted and came with Pachs.

Thanks for the info! I just did a Google search for "Classic Hunter" and found several photos and info on this revolver.

You couldn't ask for a better friend! We have swapped several guns back and forth over the years. He knew I always lusted after this beauty and I was absolutely speechless when he gave it to me.

I would like to change out the grips to a set of Eagle "Secret Service" style grips in rosewood. I am also looking for any suggestions on holsters.

Thanks again for the help.......:)!

Changing grips

Hi. Have you fired the gun yet, if not I would fire it before changing grips. I have a Trail Boss and its quite a hand full with the rubber.
Enjoy It. Les

I am having Lobo leather make me two holsters for similar guns to yours, they are both non fluted with 2 5/8" barrels.

From what I have heard and seen they make a really good holster.

I have seen the Simply Rugged holsters and I do like their pancake style rigs. I also checked out the Lobo Leather website and I like their holsters too.

I did get a chance to shoot this baby a couple of years ago, but I will have to put a few more rounds through it before I decide on grips. I just love the looks of the checkered Eagle grips.

Anyone have any experience with the 3" .44 magnums that have been Magnaported?

Came with the Pachs from the factory. I have the same gun! It will punish you with wood grips if your plan to regularly shoot it! Not a carry piece for me so I don't have any holster recommendations. Fun gun!

Your revolver does not look like it's ported. I would leave it that way.
I have factory rubber grips on my 629-4 3", and they're staying put. I think they make the recoil a bit more manageable.

Nice handcannon!
