Is this normal?

I just picked up my M&P shield from my FFL after ordering online. I was cleaning and oiling it last night and spent a good amount of time on the barrel. Today I inspected before I was going to take it to the range and noticed that it spotty. Probably not the best description. Link to pictures: Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet

Hard to tell by your pictures what it is. Does it appear to be some sort of residue or actual marks in the bore itself? Lots of new guns come from the factory with cosmoline rust preventative on them and it can take some effort to get it thoroughly cleaned out.

I take it you've given it a good soaking in a good solvent as in letting the solvent dwell for 10-15 minutes before cleaning it out.

When I have a really dirty bore from shooting I'll soak a patch in Hoppes and run it through and let it sit for 10-15 minutes before taking a bore brush to it followed by several clean patches. On really dirty or stubborn spots I may have to repeat the process a 2nd time.

Got my new shield yesterday and my barrel had that look as well kinda looked a little rusty in a few spots inside,I gave it a cleaning then put 100 rds through it now it shines inside .Clean it shoot it enjoy it.

My Shield 45 was the dirtiest, grimiest pistol I had ever seen NIB. It took a while to get the factory "stuff" off and it lubed lightly to my liking. I used Hoppe's, CLP and RemOil on it before the barrel was clean.

Looks to me like every new pistol I've bought. They test fire every pistol at the factory once or twice as part of quality control and it's the last step and they don't clean them afterwards. The oil that they use at the factory seems to soak into the small amount of powder residue and make it look gritty most of time.

I think depending on the factory and the quality of ammo they have dedicated to that QC step, one might get dirtier than another.

My Bodyguard .380 was like that too. Goop in the slide stop, goop in the safety, goop in the barrel. I always clean them when I get them anyway, but this one was extra dirty.

I bought 2 shield 45's and both of them, the barrels were very dirty from the factory. They were both somewhat difficult to clean.

Also oily slides.

But I like them very much!

In the image above first one, at the 9 o'clock position it looks like a chip out of the metal on the land (elevated) part at the beginning of it?
I would look again once cleaned up.

Looks like they had an issue during the broaching process. Anyway you look at it, it's ugly and I'd be requesting they replace the barrel.

Good luck with that. There are two threads with even worse issues and S&W keeps sending them back saying they're within specs.
