I recently bought a 15-3 “shooter”. It’s in pretty decent shape and has a great trigger. Issue 1: Prior to taking it to the range today, I noticed that the timing is off by a tiny fraction on every cylinder when cocked slowly in single action. There are no issues with double action or when forcefully cocking in single action. There is a slight amount of play when the hammer is cocked, but not bad and it can’t be forced out of timing.

Issue 2: After taking it to the range today for the first time, I had some misfires using PMC Bronze FMJ. There were two or three rounds total out of several cylinders full that showed a prominent firing pin dent but didn’t fire. They all fired on the 2nd or 3rd try. I would normally not use PMC ammo as I’ve never thought it was good ammo and some have reported hard primers in various calibers. I tried Federal and Magtech through it with no issues.

That got me thinking, could the two be related? Like I said, I bought it used with no inspection. It’s in decent shape, but without knowing its history, could these issues be related to weak springs and/or lack of cleaning?

What are my options here? Any help is appreciated.

Issue 1: Use empty cases or dummy rounds to check carry up (what some call timing); they align the extractor star (especially on the older guns) and provide a more accurate assessment of carry up.

If after proper checks the revolver does not carry up, there are a few potential causes -- likeliest being the hand -- but should be checked and repaired by a qualified revolversmith.

There is supposed to be a slight amount of rotational play in the cylinder when the hammer is cocked -- that's part of S&W design for reliable function even when alignment between charge hole and barrel face aren't 100% on.

Issue 2: Check your strain screw and make sure it's fully seated.
