...the ammo shortage that is !

Towards the end of 2025 and early 2026 we kept seeing posts and reading articles , you tube etc on how we were very likely facing yet another ammo shortage ...and possibly worse than any of the previous ones .

So far .... nothing !

Now I say be prepared any ways and keep a good supply of ammo on hand ....just in case .

But as usual ....take whatever you read or hear with several grains of salt .

About year 20000 I stocked up / hoarded a Lifetime Supply of 22 LR Ammo , reloading primers and powder ...
Best investment I ever made !

I've been freshening up my stocks. In some areas, I might have a lifetime supply.
5.56 and 9MM are sufficiently vulgar to astound most news crews. 45 auto and 44 magnum are in glorious excess. 30-06 and 45-70 are abundant given the shift to 5.56 and 9 for most range sessions. current stock building focus is upon the lesser used cartridges that deviate from the primary heavy lifters

I'm very happy that there is not presently an ammo or reloading component shortage. However, at any time, no one knows when, something in the universe will twitch and we'll be looking at empty shelves. The supply chain is holding now, but it's very rickety and prone to breakage. And there is no reserve. When they are out, they are out. It isn't like it used to be when others were ready to rush in and take up the slack. And it very likely won't be a short term thing. Months or years.

Your profile says you joined this Forum in 2014 so from that you have lived through at least a couple of panics.

Perhaps a better question is where is AFFORDABLE ammunition? Anti-gun politicians are attempting to create shortages through high taxes on ammo and requiring all sales including private must go through a FFL dealer.

Everyone doesn't live in Pennsylvania...Currently in my area you can't find a store with more that 8 types of powder, there are no primers. Any ammo you find is either .22 or 9mm a few shotgun shells. A few years back same thing...you couldn't find a 22 shell with a Gieger counter and primers were scarce and expensive. Not a problem for me but a problem for anyone who isn't looking beyond the first row of trees. When you can't walk into a sporting goods store and buy simple .270, 30-30 or common rounds, there's a shortage. Just because you didn't have a problem means nothing to the thousands of people who do...

I haven't bought any ammo from a storefront for a long time. I have bought powder but been awhile. I have ordered primers on-line as well with no issues. I need to get an inventory of what all I have and make an order if I feel short of any particular item. My reloading supplies are for when there is nothing available at all anywhere like a few years back.

I recently posted that primers were probably as low as they are going to get not sure what others are seeing.

I actually am probably short on bullets, so may concentrate there for the time being.

Was recently down at my local Cabela’s.
As I mentioned another post, I bought a box of 357.
Well, I’m cruising the ammo, didn’t see any 22 where I usually see it.
Found a small amount on an end shelf.
So I ask the clerk lady, is this all the 22 you got?
She replied yes lately we’re having trouble getting 22.
I said, I have more at home than you have here.
She replied, so do I!

picked up 150 rounds of 44 special (new factory) to use in my recent purchases, total cost was $125 for new factory made. The dealers didn't know it's current value, considered myself somewhat lucky. Jacketed bullets allowed on my range.
Also two boxes of 30-06 (165 grain)rem and 2 boxes of Herter's 270 (130 grain) win for a total of $90. I just don't shoot that much, usually pistols at the local indoor range.

Also a nice K38 serial # 93466 (1950) my birth year. Looks almost unfired, barely visible turn line, with diamond target stocks without any relief cut in the left stock. I think they have some decent value above and beyond the gun itself. Not bad for 75 years old. Under $750 out the door. very poor attendance at this show, parking lots not even close to full. Looked like a sock drawer gun.
I wouldn't have gone but need a break from Pickleball.
