I was in a VW. In Memphis. With my Bro.
We were headed back to his apt. This song came on the Radio.
We stopped talking and started listening!
He did what?
My Bro pulled into his parking spot, and we sat there and listened to the rest of the song.
We didn’t fully understand it then and probably still don’t!

I was standing at the counter
I was waitin' for the change
When I heard that old familiar music start
It was like a lighted match
Had been tossed into my soul
It was like a dam had broken in my heart

Were y'all listening to it on WHBQ in Memphis? We listened to it on that station, down in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi - seemed like they played it constantly that summer. But apparently the bridge that the song was talking of was in Leflore County - or at least that is the one that was used in the movie, made several years later. Bobbie Gentry was originally from Chickasaw County, and the Tallahatchie River does not run through it, nor does it border it.

I always liked narrative story songs. Another from that general time period is Harper Valley PTA. Then there’s El Paso. Always wondered what happened to wicked Felina. Many Mexican songs are of that type, called Corridos down there. Some go on forever.

It’s a Song People!
The Great Bobby Troup-
‘Flagstaff, Arizona,
Don’t forget Winona.’
How many of you folks ever been to Winona?
I have! You don’t really need to go there. Not a lot to see!
Its greatest significance is - it rhymes with Flagstaff, AZ!
Not to mention its East of Flag, so if your heading West to LA, well Dah!

Been to and through Winona many times. It is in Montgomery County - if you are going there from Tallahatchie County, you have to go through Grenada County, or you can take a route that takes you Leflore County and Carroll County.

"Always wondered what happened to wicked Felina." Listen to the Marty Robins song "Felina", then you will know.

Wife and I saw Bobbie Gentry preform it live in Vegas. She was gorgeous and was the opening act for Dean Martin.

I did not know there was a song about her. Or that her name was spelled Feleena. Must have never caught on like El Paso did.
