The gun is set up as a shooter, possibly by a LEO who wanted to use it as a carry piece. That tells me, it's a really nice gun that you should shoot and enjoy.
You may want to go to a gun show and check out various grips that are available for your K frame with a square butt. Hogue makes some comfortable rubber grips at a very reasonable price. They also sell exotic wood grips that are very nice. Eagle Grips makes some very nice grips too. You can also check out grip availability at the auction sites.
BTW, I wouldn't try to bring the gun back to its original state. There are people who would consider your gun to be really nice as it is.
IMHO, it's worth every bit of the $300 you paid for it. The modifications cost money. It's not a collector piece but, so what? Not all of my guns are collector grade either. It's going to become a fun gun that you can shoot, take care of, and enjoy for many years to come.
Before buying replacement grips, I'd recommend getting in touch with forum member, VM. His inventory varies, but I've done a lot of business with him and am not only pleased with the grips I get from him, but he also has great communications skills.
That first photo of a pre-model 10 that was posted is from 1949. I know because it is my gun.
