and Jimmy. He'll be 100 tomorrow.

The wife and I went to the annual Peanut Festival in Plains, GA over the weekend. It's relatively close to home and something to do after being hunkered down for two days waiting on Helene to blow through. They were also celebrating the upcoming 100th birthday of former President Jimmy Carter.

Plains is a small town that hasn't changed much over the years. Still primarily an agriculturally based community of modest means. Here are some pictures of the downtown.

Plains GA circa 1925. Sorry about the finger, it was very sunny and my vision was limited.

Coca-Cola was a major influence in the area for years with several bottling plants in Georgia.

It's a 5x. :(:(:( That's a few too many XX's for me.

I had fried shrimp on a stick for lunch. The wife enjoyed some peanut butter ice cream. I met a holster maker from my area. I'm going to give him a visit.

All in all, a fun morning.

M&M Mars is usually there handing out free candy at their booth. They were a no show. :( I like free candy. All I got were a few bags of these...

Sitting by the roadside on a summer's day
Chatting with my mess-mates, passing time away
Lying in the shadows underneath the trees
Goodness, how delicious, eating goober peas.

Peas, peas, peas, peas
Eating goober peas
Goodness, how delicious,
Eating goober peas.

Just remembered my Pap Pap singing this song to us.

Bought a rather large bag of some of the best parched, unsalted peanuts near Brooklet, Ga years back. They have a festival every year. Ate some at the festival in a smaller bag. They were perfect to my taste. When we got back home, our Siberian Husky recue liked them, too.

We got a phone call and had to race to the other side of town. I closed the bag well and tossed them to the center of our pool table. Went straight to them when we returned. Lucky had ripped a four foot by about six to eight inch piece of our leather cover for the table completely
off. It has four well-made fitted corners, so it stayed in its' place.

Somehow, Lucky Girl still got to the bag, and there was bag pieces and peanut shells everywhere. I went through them to at least eat the remains. Obviously, she liked them as much as I. Nothing edible left.
My fault, so no harsh correction was made.

Just before the battle, the General hears a row
He said, "The Yanks are coming, I hear their rifles now"
He turns around in wonder and what do you think he sees?
The Georgia Militia eating goober peas.
Well Yeah!
Who do you think would be eating goober peas?

I like peanuts, roasted and salted, but the boiled peanuts are terrible.

We had a friend in Montana say the same thing...turns out she was eating them in the shell. ;):D:D

Good boiled peanuts are a bit of an art that starts with the right type of nuts, the right amount of salt, temp and time.

Been through Plains quite a few times -- attended Jimmy Carter's Sunday school class one time. I love peanuts, but I've had to stop eating all nuts (and lots of other things I love) due to having so many dang kidney stones.
