As an Ambassador of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, I wish to announce that Punxsutawney Phil, the Seer of Seers, emerged from his stump before an admiring throng, and through his interpreter, announced to the world that he did see his shadow, meaning that there will be six more weeks of winter. Pull out the long johns.

Peta wants to use AI generated images (holograms??) of Phil because he's being mistreated so badly. He's the safest groundhog in the country. PETA does this every year. I suppose they mean well.

For what it's worth, that is a real Smith & Wesson Model 629 that was commissioned by the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club for Groundhog Day 1997. I know it's real because it's mine. It has Punxsutawney Phil engraved on the sideplate and "Punxsutawney Groundhog Club" engraved in cursive on the barrel. They had to use an 8 3/8 inch barrel to get all the words in.

My grand dad had a cattle farm. He'd take his wagon down to the creek and fill up a few milk cans with water. Then we'd go to the hole. He'd pour water down the hole till it was full then use a tobacco stick to hold the groundhogs head under water till it drowned.

Probably be frowned upon these days.

In mountains of Va friend that owned property and I bought 17 cal rifles and sat under back overhang of old farm house and shot them at around 100 yards in his field. He let cow farmer next door use his field as it kept grass down. Old farmer asked us to get rid of groundhogs on his place so we got rid of them. He let us hunt on his place. Good times but way to cold for me now..

I have never seen a live groundhog while hunting ...
Maybe we have them ... Wood Chucks in ... North Louisiana I but don't know !

You folks back east clearly need a new groundhog. PuxPhil's (no, I am not going to try and type his full name or I'll hurt myself) Canadian counterpart, Wiarton Willlie, has predicted the opposite:

"Wiarton Willie, along with most of his Canadian counterparts, has predicted an early spring after he did not see his shadow on Monday morning on Groundhog Day."

We couldn't find ours out here. He left a note on his burrow that said, "Gone gardening "
And given the current weather report, I believe him.

Years ago, a buddy and I went hunting. As I walked in I saw a groundhog sunning himself on a fallen tree. When we met up later my friend said "Good Lord, did you see the size of that squirrel sunning on the tree?"

We thought of dropping an open small propane cylinder down a hole, covering it and sticking in end of 20' of fuse, light fuse a run like h-ll but never did.

Always heard that livestock could break a leg in groundhog holes, but never saw it happen or talked to anyone who had first hand experience of it. It is however, hard on the equipment in the hay field, I definitely have first hand experience of that.
