I dredged this up to reply in a thread but decided to post on its own --

Pair elephant feet measure 18" footprint I got 1975 in Nairobi $25 ea.. Lid lifts off to store stuff inside --

I had a native carver copy a dozen pairs Colt & S&W grips 1951 --

Ivory figurines I got 1945-47 Belgian Congo $10-20 ea. Black horns my DIY in ebony to replace broke off. The naked lady signed Walther 1960s London street market $10. London was a good source of misc ivory; tusk ends, cue balls, etc.

Mostly still in my family, Son & Daughter.

Congo ivory ware house I visited with the carver had tons in storage, tusks looking ages old as if found in the field, mostly mature size tusks up to maybe 7 foot long & 7+" dia at the jaw. Sales were made only to native carvers in small quantity as a gov't effort to foster employment. My carver also made me a chess set. The figurines were by unknown carvers, sold by native moslem merchants who offered various African wares of ebony, ivory, leather, etc. , they spread on a blanket in front of a hotel at night ----->

Nothing like an elephant foot to brighten up the living room ensemble!

Elephant foot stools are cool I have several, I bought a fair amount of carved ivory in the early 80"s had I known they were going to ban ivory products I would have bought a lot more.
Getting ready to break up my trophy collection but will hang on to the ivory tusks, carvings and feet. Also have elephant ears used as canvases.

rhmc - I'm not on here near often enough, but I love Africa and your stories are wonderful. You really ought to consider gathering them together in a book.

I'd take those elephant feet and walk around in the fresh snow for a while at the local park early in the morning.

Neat stuff from not so long ago different times.

The eco-freaks tell us that if you burn it, the elephant will reappear in Africa.

No kidding. I was at a benefit dogwalk a few weeks ago for... an anti poaching in Africa group.

Yes, I made sure to mention how many tons of useful money went up in smoke to the benefit of zero elephants and...

Yes... I am an alpha hotel. ;)
