Ivory Ban Update

California, Washington, Iowa, Virginia and Connecticut are all introducing bills to ban the sale of ivory at the state level. Modeled after laws the Humane Society and Wildlife Conservation Society pushed through in New York and New Jersey, these laws are overbroad and hurt African elephant populations. They do not comply with exemptions in the Endangered Species Act, and they needlessly strip value of innumerable collectible items containing ivory, hurting owners and businesses alike.

Rick since you are in Virginia such as I do you have any information on the bill? Funny I just gave my Son a S&W Model 39-2 with elephant ivory grips carved over 20 years ago.

UPDATE Sorry should have hit the link first. I guess Senator Ebbin thinks ivory grips from 25 or even 100 years ago pose a threat to elephants in Africa today. What an idiot. Another NOVA liberal who knows what's best for all of us.

Yes I spoke to Senator Stuart's office. The bill has been referred to the Va. State Courts of Justice committee. Senator Stuart is part of that committee. He is an avid sportsman and realizes a common sense approach to the ivory issue.

The most cogent answer I've heard is this:

The president would like China to stop importing and using ivory. He feels he cannot ask China to stop using ivory while anyone in our country has anything of value containing ivory. My response would be "how's the human rights thing working out in China?"

There are art collectors here in California with Asian art made from ivory. It is estimated that there is over $100,000,000 worth of ivory art in California. You are going to see a lot of very rich collectors being very mad.

It is not illegal to possess ivory, or to receive it or give it away, only illegal to sell, or offer for sale. Gun dealer and sellers can exhibit and sell a gun, with ivory grips, and place a notice with the gun that the grips are not for sale with the gun, however the buyer of the gun will be gifted the grips for free. Effectively making any firearm or artwork with ivory dead inventory and valueless, unless the ivory can be removed prior to resale.

Honest question...How does one know if any ivory is antique? I've seen late model pistols with ivory grips...is there some sort of test they can use other than carbon dating. If I'm not mistaken that may be the major problem that the powers that be are trying to negotiate by any means possible, if that means banning the use or sale of all or any ivory then I suppose thats the angle they must be using. I have used Mammoth ivory for knife scales, as well as fossilized Walrus ivory. Its pretty obvious when your using something that old but even ivory that is over a hundred years old can look amazingly new depending on whether or not it has absorbed any oils from skin or other body parts. Just curious about what method or means one uses to determine whether any piece of ivory someone may have is older than a certain age. I don't think you can base it on the age of whatever item it is on, pistol, knife, etc. most people that go to the effort to defraud the public will use any means necessary to accomplish their mission.

He is good people and hopefully will end this. Yes that's my Son who made Eagle Scout in November and that was his Christmas present. A 1972 39-2 with ivory grips. Those grips were made over 25 to 30 years ago.
