I prefer leather and prefer OWB carry and I do both 98% of the time. I like to keep a plastic holster around for all my handguns in case I plan on being near water at the lake or on my raft and I like something that I can slip on quickly if I am just running over to the mailbox.
In my search I was surprised at how few plastic holsters there were for the 686. I bought a fobus and while it was certainly an adequate holster, it was made for the 4 in and I have a 3" and it held the gun about 25 yds off your body. That would be fine for range use but I throw a light shirt over top and it looked like I had a baby on my hip.
Then I ran across this guy
SW 686 Plus IWB Kydex holster for EDC | Kydex Holsters for IWB or OWB Concealed Carry Everyday Carry
Received it yesterday and am over all pretty happy. It seems that his bread and butter is the 2.5 inch so he offers it for the 3 inch but then doesnt roll the bottom. Of course I would have preferred full coverage but I did know going in that some of the muzzle would be exposed.
It is a little rattle/y when not on but when wearing it it doesnt make a sound. Its made out of nice thick kydex and I have done a fair amount of work with that style clip so expect it to hold up fine. Tandy leather has replacements a lot cheaper than you can usually find them on ebay.
It makes a nice positive click and I wore it for about 12 hours yesterday appendix carry through a full day of motion and it was comfortable and the gun felt secure.
I havent spent a lot of time with IWB carry but leather IWB can get pretty groody fast in the AZ summer.
It feels good Apendix, Wearing it to the left of your zipper cross draw and all the way to 4 oclock on the right side though I did have trouble with reholster at that position. It sits in really low which is good for concealment but can make the holster drop below the belt line when worn behind the hip and canted forward. I have it on now appendix while I type this and have practiced drawing from the seated position and you know what .. I can get used to this.
I usually wear a tee shirt and then throw a light button down on top to cover the gun but you cant even see the gun when worn to the right or left of the zipper with just a tee shirt thrown on top.
I would give it 4 stars because it doesnt cover my muzzle and the rattle bothers me some but .. all in all .. very pleased with the purchase. Maybe .. just maybe .. it is about $10 more than it should be for simple kydex with clip but I cant make one and when you cant find anything similar I am ok with it.
Wont replace my leather OWB for regular use but for its purposes I think it will work out just fine.
Of course I have to add the disclaimer. I dont know this guy from Adam. Dont work for him, never met him and exchanged one email. Just thought I would let my fellow revolver CCW guys in on something that took me a couple weeks to find.
