If it's J272XX it should be from around 1969-1970 ish. If it is in fact a 2J72XX serial number I won't be much help because I don't see any 2JXXXX serial numbers in the SCSW.

bummer thats the right number on the bottom of the grip frame.. it is fully engraved by Jeffery Flannery

1J prefixes start in the 1983 So I would assume 2J is in the same year. You didn't say what model number. 36,37,38,

The "floating J" serial numbers are confusing. The floating J with up to five numerical digits (as in the case of the OP) were made in 1971-1972. The floating J with six digits were in the 1983 timeframe.

Looks to be a nicely engraved model 36 (steel frame) or 37 (alloy frame).

The SCSW 4th edition has a (persistent) typo in the J frame SN appendix; 1971-1972 should read '1'J1 to 999J99, with up to five numbers as Russ noted above.

its a 36. if its not old enough ill be sending to my kid in AZ can only bring in guns off the Cali list if they are over 50 years old, if she doesn't like it she will give it to me. I'm buying this one too its a k frame 38spc i sent a message to S&W for a emil regarding the DOM I'm sure its over 50 years old. I'm going to use it as my everyday CCW

The .38 Military & Police SN is from the early 1920s. You must be fortunate enough to live in a CA county that issues CCW permits.

Looks as though you only have 5 years before you can get your model 36 back from your daughter - if you move out of the state, sooner :).

Good news Smith called me back the 36 DOM is 1969. the k frame he couldn't tell me but he guessed in the 20`s
meruphydod, that the first time in a long time someone told me I'm fortunate to live in So Cal lol feels like they don't want me here anymore, taxes are insane and i pay 1300 a year for DMV fees almost 4k for my house and now were going to be paying 80 cents tax per gallon. and i get double taxed for fire because i live out on a ranch instead of in town.. My county Sheriff is pro gun i don't think he's got a lot of company in that regards with other heads of LE I heard the department say they want as many guns out there CCW.

Good news Smith called me back the 36 DOM is 1969 . . .

If that 1969 ship date was given by someone at the factory for 2J7202 . . . and you're relying on it being 50 yrs old in 2019 to satisfy California DOJ law . . . I believe I'd ask for a second opinion.

The earliest ship date for a 2J prefix s/n that I've seen quoted from factory shipping records by Roy Jinks . . . S&W Historian for many years . . . is June 1970 and the latest I've seen is one that didn't ship until October 1975. I don't know what California DOJ considers the date of manufacture for their 50-year rule but BATFE has accepted the actual ship date for S&W firearms since date of manufacture records do not (generally) exist.

I know it's hard to believe but not everyone who answers the phone at S&W will have first-hand knowledge or will take the time to research company shipping records to obtain an accurate date for a specific firearm. A Letter of Authenticity is available at a cost of $75 to obtain a precise date if & when you feel the need for one.

Good luck,

thanks for the info, Ive had letters form them on a couple guns before I meant good news that I got a call back form Smith, I'm not concerned too much about the age i was hopeful it would have been old enough but it can wait i have a 2ed home in Az were going to move once my wife retires. I'm just glad i bought it i love his work.. thanks all for the help

The customer service rep may have heard you say the SN without the number 2 in front, which would have been from 1969.

I know from firsthand experience about living in, and fleeing, the PRK. Last taxpayer out, turn off the lights :(.

Mistered; no one understand the list. I've been telling everyone that california won the gun ban years ago they have restricted gun for the sake of what they call safety? its gone was simple limit the guns we can buy and in time the list will grow and so it has been, this state is lost i hate living here was born and raised here but this place makes me sick... not just guns just everything...
