J Frame Grip Recommendations

CaliTrav - My 640-1 is charged with 135 gr Gold Dot .38+. I have shot .357's with it but it's not a lot of fun. Smooth wood boot-type grips are good for pocket carry and don't catch on clothing or gather lint/debris. Personally I like S&W's factory-wood target stocks or rubber --Hogue, Pach, etc.-- on my range and field guns. Recently I added a Tyler T-grip to a couple N-frames with magnas and that's working well. I just acquired a J-frame Tyler T grip and will try that out with a set of magnas or Patrick Grashorn stag stocks. But I'll stick with the wood Spegel boot grip on the 640-1 for pocket carry.

While these may look large and unwieldy, they are pretty narrow and really don't add to the carry profile. They allow a full grip and mitigate recoil nicely. Not that expensive, so worth trying if they at all interest you - they are Ergo Deltas, and just ignore the Batman jokes.

What about the reviews that say the new ones have major fit and finish issues. I been searching ebay to try and find a old pair of the originals. I just went with the hogue bantam for better conceal carry than the larger hogue grips that were on there but it has the open backstrap.

Don't know about current quality of Pacmayr products. Not sure if mine are from this century! :)'s

I have gone with the eagle secret service grips on my "j" frames, but smooth wood. I tried rubber, wood with a gripping surface... nothing worked as well for me as smooth wood. Only .38's . The one "j" I have that is .357 has a much larger/longer rubber grip.

I like the old Herrett Shooting Star Conversion Grips (not the Shooting Ace).
They can still be found on Ebay.

Custom wood or rubber grips, as long as they cover up the metal back strap
that will cut down the recoil sting with heavier loads, if they fit your hand size.

I have Hogue's on my little snub nose J frames.
