I Have a lovely no lock M&P 340 waiting on me at my gun store when I get home on leave in March. I already ordered some stuff for it (Apex J-frame trigger kit, speed loaders, A-Holster pocket holster, Pachmayr SJ-C compac grips). I was looking at some smaller grips for pocket use as I don't think the Pachmayr's will be great for that. I love the looks of the Spegel Boot grips and I have read great things about them over the years. VZ Grips also makes a J-Frame grip out of G-10 which is almost the same in pattern. They are both about the same price so... Which one? or neither?

Uncle Mikes Boot grips on my two J-frames...

Spegel all the way. The VZ grips are very heavy and don't look near as nice as checkered Spegel boot grips.

Edit to add: The grips in Rhino's pic are a rubber version of the Spegel checkered boot grip.

I love VZ Grips and am thinking about ordering a set for my MP340...I just can't decide on the color.

I wish uncle mikes still made their boot grip I would have one of those and no delima. lol I think I'm going to go with the VZ grips. They are G10 so will take more abuse and the 340 is a working gun not a show piece. It will spend most of it's existance buried in my pocket or on my hip so no need to be fancy. These are the ones I am getting I think.

If you want a rubber grip, the Hogue Bantam Boot Grip is about as good as it gets. The new S&W factory rubber grips are nice as well. I like both of them considerably better than the Uncle Mike's. With that being said, I would prefer G-10 or wood over rubber, as I do not like my grips on concealed carry guns to be "sticky" because they grab on clothing which can lead to a concealed gun being "exposed" or even a slower draw.

Yeah I was kinda worried about that with the Bantam grip though I like the looks and feel of it it's stickey.

My preference is the Hogue Ultra Compact Bantam grip in wood rather than rubber. They are a little thicker through the middle giving just the right girth for a solid grip. The only drawback they have is you can't use a speed loader with them installed but no problem, just carry your reloads in speed strips.

Sorry if I'm threadjacking, but I have a question:

Will any grip designated as a "J-frame grip" fit any J-frame (with regard to sq or rd butt, of course)? Are they pretty universal? I haven't seen any specific distinctions other than the frame size.

I have a 442 that wants new shoes.

I love the looks of the black checkered VZ grips...

Anyone know if they are sticky (grab clothing)?

I find the stock rubber grips to work fine....but they do grab a bit..and that ain't cool.

J frame round butt grips will fit all round butt j frames. One note, the early I frames are often confused with the J frame but are smaller/shorter.

For pocket carry rubber grips get 'kind of slow' when you pull your weapon. I tried a few but went back to smooth. YMMV

Just got a set recently with the checkering and had the same concern, but they don't grab at all. It's been cold here lately so I've been wearing some fleece type stuff with the grabby wooly type inside liner and still doesn't grab on these grips.

I honestly don't get the complaints about the weight on the VZ grips. I have them on my 642 which obviously is fairly light to begin with. The VZ's are 2.8 oz in added weight, but I honestly notice no difference in weight when I carry it compared to when I had the stock rubber grips on it.

Preference in the end I guess. I like the VZ's compared to most stuff out there. Wood is nice, but I'm a fan of G10 for grips when I have the option.

My HKS speedloaders work great with the VZ's too where I had some challenges with the stock rubber. The swedge on the left panel is much more generous. Speedstrips obviously would be a non-issue with either.
