I recently got a 1 7/8" j frame. I am looking for a holster to carry it in. I want to carry it with me out hunting, so something to protect it and hold it secure is a must.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

There are lots of used leather belt holsters for J frames out there, with thumb breaks. Check the trader board and I bet you'd turn up a few. They can be had pretty cheap.

When I had a "J" frame (model 36) I found a nice used Hunter brand style 1100 holster for it cheap on ebay.

Simple -- Uncle Mike's. Excellent protection and inexpensive. Nothing much to brag about though. They simply work.

I'm not familiar with S.D. laws, but you might consider a pocket holster if the gun can be concealed or if you have a CPL. I carry either a .38 or a .22 that way when I'm hunting, depending on where I am and what I think I might encounter.

I just recieved a great holster from Lobogunleather. He is a member here. Ray makes a great OWB holster for a J frame. I got the enhanced pancake (the Sip Special) and it is great ! Look on his site...Lobogunleather.com you won't regret it.

Ib looking for a holster to retain the "J" frame I have a Blackhawk SERPA with a lock that works well, and is very secure.

U b :D looking for that, eh?

I use the Bianchi No 5B thumbsnap holster, and find it very satisfactory.

You can spend more at El Paso Saddlery for their Threepsersons model, but I like the Bianchi a little better in this case, and they can be had cheap at many gun shows.

Besides a couple shoulder holsters these two are my favorites…
My $10 Bianchi gun show find.

Yup, I agree with above post. Blackhawk SERPA. (great pic's Driheat!)
Comes with a pancake clip AND a belt clip (or you can get the one with just the pancake-which is all I use-for like $29!!!). So, the price is GREAT on it.

It's secure (will hold it hunting while climbing over a fence or into a treestand, or whatever...).
You could even safely hang upside down if you needed to!
Primarily, it will keep it from being snatched by a badguy as well.

I keep my Jframe in it when I take it off, and that even acts like a "manual safety" in many ways while it sits on the nightstand.
In fact, I could make it clip to the rail of the Bed if I was more paranoid.
;)

I don't even have to wear a belt as it pancake clips (easily/comfortably) to any pair of pants...or even the SHORTS I usually wear in Arizona here. I forget it's on.
You can adjust the cant (tilt) angle for concealment/draw style preferances...and with a casuel shirt it's easy to hide...even as an OUTSIDE the Waistband (again: read that "comfortable") holster.

I even use it's pancake clip on those rare occasions that I wear pants/belt, and it clips right over very comfortably/and yet securely.
Convenient and "Versatile" is an understatement.

I just can't say enough GOOD about it.

I've even been thinking about drilling a small hole for a lock on the flat part behind the trigger (see photo above) to be able to lock it safely into the holster when we have children in the house.

The thing is AWSOME in SO MANY ways. I've used it in 3 defensive pistol classes (lotsa exercising it) and it's still (again for $29) GOING STRONG!
Plenty fast to draw, also. The retention doesn't slow you down...and in fact puts your finger in the PERFECT position on the drawstroke. Best holster I've ever had.
SUPER COMFORTABLE and CONCEALS EASY!

Best invention since the J-Frame itself!

J Frame holster

Along a more traditional line there are several holster makers that will make small leather flap holsters. I just had one made for my Ruger SP101 3", it's great. I am having another made for my S&W 34 Kit Gun. Very competitively priced and great for woods and field carry. Hope this helps.

Blaze,
I might like a good flap holster also for occasional wet conditions/forest carry/wet brush (Northern Arizona...it's not ALL desert!)on wildlife photo trips.

I like the fact that it would also be fairly unobtrusive...and still OWB.
Maybe even somewhat square in shape looking like a small gear bag...yet actually an upright (flap) holster.
If I have it made square, I could fit the jframe, and a speedloader, in unobtrusive "water resistant" comfort.
I like the idea for wet photo trips.

Any chance of posting a picture or a manufacturer's website link?
How bad was the cost?

Thanks for any information.

Which J Frame?

Hammered or hammerless? It kinda makes a difference with a holster that must be secure enough for outdoor duty.

My answer

I sometimes carry a J frame on my 4 wheeler and also when on the tractor. I use a Bianchi nylon holster with a thumb break (this J frame has a hammer --- if yours is hammerless or has a shrouded hammer --- this setup wouldn't work). The Bianchi is very rigid (reholstering while on the 4 wheeler is easy) and provides good protection and security (my .38 won't fall out of the holster when on the 4 wheeler) and is easy to clean. I keep the holster on an Uncle Mike's rigid nylon belt with a velcro buckle-fastener. An Uncle Mike's ammo carrier also stays on the belt. This makes for an easy on-off outfit that's always ready to go and can be worn over or under whatever clothing I happen to have on at the time.

J FRAME HOLSTERS

I use a Fobus paddle holster. There light weight and revolver locks in place and it stays were you put it, around $20-$25.

Simply Rugged would be a good choice.

Or, check eBay. I recently picked up a Safety Speed leather clip-on holster with thumb strap for $20 or so.

If legal, the ONLY way to carry a J frame is pocket carry. If you have to have a belt holster, get a full size gun.
