J Frame id.

Hello I'm looking for some help identifying I identify a gun that I have. I believe it's a J square frame But I'm having trouble with the serial number and looking that up. I've included some pictures.
It's a Mod 36 J square frame.

Model? # 08228
Any help is appreciated. I inherited this but have no history. Would love to get pointed to a resource I can use to id the mfg year and any other details.

That’s a 2” square butt Chief Special from the late 1960’s (68-69). The number on the yoke is an assembly number.

Nice little gun. The original stocks had the serial number stamped on the inside of the right panel.

Thank you. I appreciate that. I didn't even see the number on the grip. Looks like the same number on the butt. Thanks for such a quick response s&wchad. I entered the in the s&w serial number search and got nothing in return.

Nice looking Chiefs Special Model 36.

Based on others nearby yours in my database I'd guess S&W shipped yours in March or April '68.

If you look on the bottom left side of the grip frame you'll see the same assembly number you see on the yoke. It's also on the inside of the side plate.

If you push the extractor rod all the way and look at the back (inside) of the extractor star you'll see the serial number there (takes good light and perhaps a magnifying glass).

You guys are awesome. Thanks for the info. Thank you very much. I had hit a wall searching, but with just a little extra info I've been able to get a better understanding of the gun.
The gun is in good shape because I had it re-blued by S&W. When it was given to me it was in bad shape. Mostly cosmetic. Works great but it had many pits and scratches as if someone had driven a nail in with it. S&W did a fine job. I now have a new grip as well. Sometimes it's a better fit for carrying than my other pistols.

The S & W website’s “serial number lookup” appears to be restricted to guns under recall. But you already found the best place to ask about S & W serial numbers in general. Enjoy!

Doubtful since it claims to be a Model 36.
