J frame in 30 super carry

I believe the 30SC was D.O.A. Lots of noise and news when it was first introduced, but I haven't seen or heard a word since. Never even seen a gun chambered for it, much less a box of ammo in any store.
Better to just let it die in peace.

The 30 SC at 50,000 PSI will never be chambered in a six shot J frame size cyl.

That puts the chambers right on top of the cyl lock notches; the weakest point of any cyl. The 5 shot cyl puts the chambers between the notches. An odd # of chambers in a cyl is always a stronger design.

That's a good point.

Not trying to advocate for Ruger by a long shot, but looking at my SP-101, I noticed the notches are offset a bit from the top of the chambers. They're not quite between chambers, but far enough away from the weak point to make a difference.

And I still think .30 Carbine with moonclips in an SP-101 would be a fun little barker :D

I cannot find the website or post but many years ago I remember a lever action and single action that fired a shortened version of the 30carbine. That was an interesting set. maybe from Italy to get around military cartridges ban. But i am solidly in the group of "bring back the .327 revolvers"so I can mull it over for ayear and never buy it… again

as someone that owns and carries a Shield EZ in 30SC daily as well as a j frame in 357 mag. I don't really think a j frame would catch on in that cal. I am a fan of the new cartridge, it is fun to shoot and recoils noticeably less than the same gun in 9mm. However, it is loud and ammo is starting to become more available, but still not as easy as 9mm or 38/357.

It is a rimless cartridge, and I am not a fan of moon clips so that takes it out if consideration for me if S&W ever did make such a gun.

Re-Load

Every time I get close to buying a.327 mag I hesitate because of the ammo price/ availability. In truth I would probably shoot more.32 HR mag but that's hard to find, also
I would like to try it sometime.

Re-Load no ammo shortage...

"Too bad they don't make available, affordable 9mm J frames. Everyone would want one of those to go along with their Glock".

They can be had. I have three.

I'm thinking if S&W would make the 30 super carry in a J frame it would use moon clips & hopefully have 6 rounds and similar ballistics to 9mm. Would anyone else be interested?

It is called a 327 Federal Magnum. :)

Ok, after reading more post, I see this was already mentioned.

The 30 SC does use the same bullets as the .327 and 32 H&R.

Wonder what it would be like touching one of those off inside of a room?
No thanks.

Right, I was thinking bye-bye eardrums.

The old Blackhawk's in .30 carbine had 7" or 10" barrels, (correct me if I'm wrong,) with the concussion and blast from those a lot of people got tired of them in a hurry.

Tam Keel's View from the Porch blog yesterday (12/12/22) had a post about recent discussions regarding the viability of the .30 Super Duper Carry in a J-frame platform. I'd post a link but I can't remember if it's allowed in the rules - anyhow, Google will get you there quick.

My issued .38 saved me more than once over the course of my 30 years on the street. These experiences are the reason I continue to carry a .38 J Frame in retirement and see no reason to change what's worked for decades.

The first time I was along side someone shooting a Ruger in 30 Carbine I had to do a double take over the blast and bark. It is disconcerting to the shooter as well as anyone around. The accuracy wasn't all that great either. I looked at it as it was done just "because".

Yes. I'd be interested but I'd be more interested in a .327 Federal chambered J-frame.

I'm a 327 Federal fan.

But I just checked and Ammoseek doesn't find a single online source with 327 ammo available.

I carry my LCR 327 sometimes because I stocked up years ago.

But who needs a gun chambered for a cartridge that's unavailable?

At 50K psi, and having to run with moon clips, I see problems with cylinder lockup and hard ejection just like one gets with a 9mm with +P and +P+ ammo...

Would just like to see the J-frame .327s that S&W once made brought back...
