J frame or Shield

Shield or J frame for CCW

My 640-1 is a point and shoot gun. No safety no nothing. Simple. No jamming. Just point and shoot and that's why I carry one.

I've never even held a Shield so I can't speak for one. I did buy a Glock 36 .45 auto to try for a EDC and didn't keep it for very long. Horrible little gun.

I would stay with the J-frame and would put a set of Crimson Trace Laser stocks on it. I carried a BHP for over 40 years but it was always backed up by a snub. I just cannot get that need for total reliability our of my head and need the revolver.

The only benefit to the Shield would be an extra round or two but a faster reload via a magazine. I'm not a fan of using speed strips or the other type of reloads. If it's possible for something to go wrong it usually does. I carried revolvers for some 30 years when I was on duty. Then they finally went to semi-autos. I did carry a semi when I was plainclothes or offduty.

I voted J-frame but sorry, it isn't a J-frame, LCR 327 Fed Mag. Basically same size, 6 rounds and easily replaceable. I have given up on semi-autos, tried many, owned several and have sold all of them except my 1911. I just can't get any degree of accuracy with a compact semi auto.
I think I have a mental block on them!

I did not vote. If you are unable to obtain a proper grip on the Shield every time, that makes for a moot question. Shield is ruled out.
Question is, what other pistol will better suit my needs compared to the J frame.

I've shot my friends Shields a lot, both versions. Nice pistols. Not exactly the highest of quality however. Sights seem to loosen up and launch themselves.

I carry a J frame. I have a compact 9mm Sig (P-239). I've tried both and always go back to the J frame.

I'm not trying to match fire power with anyone, just trying to stay alive in a close encounter. Otherwise, I'm out of there.

Pawngal has a good point. If you can't quickly put the shots where you want them, find something else. I alternate between a 649 and a SIG 1911 Ultra Compact. My 1911 SIG is the sweetest shooting 1911 that I own as far as accuracy goes, and I have never had a mechanical problem with it.
Pawngal, if you get the chance, try a SIG Ultra. I'm picky, and I often trust my life to one. My J-frame has also earned my trust. Many other carry pieces have come and gone. These two have stayed and likely will, as long as they behave well.

I voted for the Shield. I have a Shield 45, and it is not only easy for me to carry, it is astonishingly accurate. I have no idea how S&W got such accuracy from a 3.3" barrel, but it impresses me every time I shoot it. It has also been extremely reliable over the 7,300 rounds I have shot.

That said, my Shield 45 is still my secondary carry gun. My main EDC is my M&P 40c .357 SIG. It's not much larger than the Shield, and it's just as accurate and reliable. It's a bit heavier than the Shield, but because it carries 11 rounds, it's my usual choice for carry.

Among the semi-autos I've owned were a Sig 320 compact, never could get consistent groups. Also a Kimber Ultra Carry 2, 1911 style couldn't get thru the Kimber recommended 500 round "break in" time. Stupid thing is the ONLY compact 9mm I've shot decently is the SCCY, sold it to help finance the Sig. Might have to get another one. Only draw back I had was the horrid long trigger pull. But for a $200 gun you can't expect perfection.

Added: Is your Sig the 9mm or the .45?
