Was cleaning out my fathers shop and came across two velvet bags each with a set of grips. I know they are j square grips in ebony they have gold plated screws and it is gold plated around the medallion , they have s&w punched numbers on the back single and double digit. Both sets have black washer. Was there a special edition 36 or 37 made that these would have come off of ?

Just Wondering

Pete

I'm not aware of a special edition J-SB that would have such a beautiful pair of stocks, but I believe they are factory and may have been special ordered . . . especially since there are two pair.

A Jon Jovino special run 3" square butt Model 60 would make an excellent choice to wear them. If you decide to sell one or both pair, please let me know.

Your stocks are Rosewood, and would look great on darn near any square butt j frame, mine are on the Model 34 in the center ...

They are probably the old Brazilian Rosewood, I have a few old blocks used to make rifle forearm tips and grips with , when freshly cut it is a dark purplish red with thin black stripes but after oil finishing and several years it turns black or nearly so. Turn them over and gently scrape a bit of the back surface away, if it shows color it's Rosewood , the good stuff, if black then it's ebony, which isn't bad either .

Pete they are nice old stocks.
Flush escutcheons
sometimes you see the Pinto's wearing them.
And agree it is Rosewood.....good rosewood

Pete, the gold coloring you're seeing is brass on the medallions and the nickel plating on the screw has likely taken a yellow color from age. I agree with the others, too, that the wood is likely a dark rosewood.

They're very nice stocks.

Thank You all for the input they are truly nice pieces. Wish they made stuff of this much quality now - a - days.
