J Frame with IL for carry poll.

I know that the majority hate the internal lock and most that carry a J Frame for defense carry pre lock models. I would like to know if any members carry a J Frame with the IL for defense. Thanks.

Good point Glockist. I tried to edit my poll to include that answer but it said it would reset the vote count. I meant to say with a non disabled IL.

If I could not have disabled the lock, I would NOT carry my 340PD, I would carry one of my older pre-locks instead.

Have you SEEN the spring that is supposed to keep the locking flag down? It looks like it belongs on a wristwatch, not a firearm!

IMHO, it would only take a minimum slight amount of rust, just a bit of dampness, even sweat vapor, to allow that spring to break or weaken, and jam the gun.

Smith ruined my son's no lock nickle 442 a few years ago but were kind enough to replace it with a new IL 642.

I just bought two of the new run no lock 642s. One will replace my kid's and the other will go in the safe for a rainy day. He's putting up the slightly used IL 642 for sale.

On Thursday I picked up a very nice like new M640-1. Carried it yesterday and loved it. I can live with MIM parts in it but will not own or trust my life to any IL gun of any maker.

A M-640-1 does not have MIM parts in it. Don't know what year it was made......but it was way before MIM!!!!! Bob

im not a fan of the lock be it on a S&W or a Taurus....but if religated as a target /plinking gun ONLY i can live with it as its sole use is to train novices, shoot paper, the occasional snake, et cetera.....but i would not bet my life on one.

I would just never own a S&W with the lock. I hate the look, don't need the function and I don't want to have to alter a new gun to get rid of it, which for me would have to include the cosmetics.I hate the look of the porthole on the side. There are a lot of nice models out, especially PC guns, but until they drop that lock, I'll stick to buying and carrying the old safe queens.

I disabled the things on my 340PD and 360PD (and my other lock guns, for that matter). It's probably not necessary, but only takes a few minutes. The first thing I do with a new revolver is replace the springs and lubricate properly, so I fix the lock while the sideplate is off. Guys sure make a big deal out of nothing. A 1911 has thumb safety, grip safety and half-cock, all of which could cause trouble, but apparently they're OK. First thing done with a HP is disconnect the magazine interlock, but that's fine with everybody. Deactivating the IL by grinding the post on the "flag" is a no-brainer, doesn't show, and doesn't affect functioning of the revolver.

My first Smith carry gun was a 640-3, which was soon replaced with a lighter to carry 442 with an IL.

After getting a bit concerned about the lock in a real defense situation, I started to carry an old Mod 36. Worry about the hammer sticking in my clothing had me thinking about removing the lock on my 442.

Then one day in the classifieds, I found a like new model 38 no dash. It's what I carry now, though it's such a pretty and like new gun, I feel bad about putting holster wear on it.

I'll get over it.

Yes. An IL 642 is my daily carry gun. If I feel the need, I carry a Ruger SP101DAO, but it gets a bit tiresome for pocket carry.

I shoot the 642 about once per quarter. It has never demonstrated any propensity for lock failure or for any other type of failure. In fact, for all the discussion of IL failure, I have found my gun to be uttterly reliable.

On the other hand, my 57 Mountain Gun has repeatedly failed to the point of utter unreliability, numerous repair issues having NOTHING to do with the hated IL. It has worked properly for 2000 rounds, since its last trip to S&W 2 years ago, but I still dont trust it. Screw tension issues. My Mountain Gun is a now a Ruger Super Blackhawk 5.5" 44 mag.
