I hate to hear that. He was a member of the Greatest Generation and a good actor. I still like to catch a Gunsmoke re-run when I can.

I just read that on the news that he passed away, there arent any like him now I loved watching Gunsmoke, and he had a good part in Hondo and Big Jim Mclain. He wll be missed.

Sorry to hear this. He was one of my favorite movie hero`s. You never heard any bad gossip about him like todays hotshots. I met him once. Unlike most actors stretched published heigth, he was every bit of his 6 ft 7"s tall.

Loved him in these two 50's Sci-Fi classics: Thing from Another World and Them. He'll certainly be missed.

Really sad news, truly a wonderful human being. Every night M-F up here in Boston, I watch all the re runs of Gunsmoke and will continue to do so. As a kid the series captivated me, never would miss a show, outstanding cast of just wonderful people.

RIP Marshall Dillon:(

A good man who lived a good life...

The show was a "must watch" at my house growing up. One of the characters on the show, Ken Curtis who played Festus, was starring at a rodeo in our home town, and came to our house to visit my stepbrother, who was severely handicapped. I thought that was a very, very nice thing for him to do.

Interesting note: I was watching a rerun of "Match Game" this morning (this episode was filmed in the 70s) and Amanda Blake was one of the panelists.

All the major stars are dead now: James Arness, Amanda Blake, Milburn Stone, Ken Curtis, and Dennis Weaver. Our age is catching up to us!

Sorry to hear the sad news. Gun Smoke was the best show on TV. Maybe still is. James Arness was a top notch guy. Don

That is very sad news. RIP Marshall.

One of my philosophies of life is the "Marshall Matt Dillon approach", and it goes like this: You don't have to shoot. But when you do, never miss.

It comes from watching the show as a kid, and in seemingly every episode, Marshall Dillon would face the outlaw in the streets of Dodge City. Marshall Dillon never drew his gun first, instead giving the outlaw a chance to surrender to the rule of law. But few did that, and when the outlaw inevitably drew his revolver, the Marshall always shot and killed him on the spot, and made everything in Dodge City safe again.

They don't teach life lessons on TV like that anymore. And it's a crying shame.

Before Gunsmoke came to television it was on the radio. If you remember this you're giving away your age. I wonder how many LEOs today were at least partially inspired by watching Gunsmoke and other similar westerns. Talk about a great role model for our society. RIP Matt.

Being a cop in Dodge City makes this really hit home. To early to know, but hopefull they will do something nice at Boothill in his memory. I never really got into Gunsmoke, but really loved How the West was Won.
