Here's a few pics I took at the auction preview yesterday. If you want to see the rest of my pics they are on this thread over at the coltforum:

Poulin and James Julia Auction Highlights (very picture heavy!) - ColtForum

Here's a table of old N frames:

An older .357

An incredible cased DA Frontier:

A nice first model HE .32 Note the short hammer spur. It's the first one of these I've seen like that:

And here's the only thing I bid on. I've been looking for one of these for years to put those nice medallioned pearl grips on. The crappy Taurus above was part of the lot so I had to bid on that as well. Hopefully that works to my advantage (who really collects those nasty things?).
Anyhow, it's a Detroit PD gun which makes it even cooler:

I had a dream last night that I was out bid. I don't have a good feeling about it anymore. I was talking with a guy at the coltforum that was at the auction yesterday. He said there were floods of phone calls and internet bidding going on. Also there were 3 out of state guys in the front row that bought 75-80% of everything there.
I think I'm going to call the auction house so I can put it out of my mind...

Did anyone catch what that early .32 Hand Ejector with the short hammer went for? It was one of two that I had absentee bids on. The other being a C***.

If this auction is anything like the last several large auction house sales that I have put in bids at (and after looking at the Colt forum, sounds like it was/is), I don't have much hope. I used to be astonished at how low some guns sold for at the large auctions, now it's how high.

Twaits, good luck, this not knowing is misery. I'm going outside to pull weeds and try to not think about it.

I handled that little .32 with the short hammer. It was a really nice little gun. I have 2 first model HEs myself but they both have a tall hammer. I had never seen one with the short hammer.
I called the auction house earlier today to ask them if they could provide any results and they were still putting the results together. I was told that if I won they would notify me via e-mail in 24 to 48 hours.

Anyhow, good luck to you too!

I just got an email from Poulin... I GOT MINE, I GOT MINE!!! I got both guns that I had bid on. One is the .32 HE first model pictured above. The back strap is factory inscribed Newark Police and the frame has a non factory inscription "H.P. Thiele-May 1st 1899." A quick Ancestry.com search shows a Henry P Theile in Newark listed as a policeman in the 1900 census.

The second is a Colt Police Positive in nickel with pearls and inscribed to the president of the First Nat. Bank in Massillon, Ohio dated 1933.

On both guns I had put bids near the upper end of the estimates and both sold for about the middle of their estimates.

Twaits, I want to hear that you got yours as well.

Congrats Kleinkaliber! That's great to hear. I haven't gotten an e-mail yet so I think I probably lost. When did you recieve notification?

That early Smith is a great little gun. You're going to love it. I love the inscriptions and the history. One of mine says "EVH '96" on the side.
I'd love to know who that was. It's nice you've been able to trace some of the history on yours. You should get it lettered when it makes it home!

The little Police Positive is great too with nice history. If you are a member over at the coltforum please post pics of it over there when you have it in hand. If you aren't a member you should join!

Again congratulations.

Twaits, I was hoping to read that you got yours this morning. The email came around 9:30 pacific time, so 12:30 east coast. I didn't have an email at about 9:00 so I tried to call them and just got a message saying they were not answering the phone as they were too busy. Checked email a little later and there it was.

I will get the Smith lettered and research Henry Theile as well as the name and bank on the Colt more thouroghly now that I know I have the guns.

As I collect Smiths and Colts with inscriptions or law enforcement markings, there was a lot to choose from at this auction.

Yeah I keep checking and hoping but nothing yet. My lot number was 337 which is a few hundred after yours so I keep hoping they haven't gotten to it yet. I don't know if they notify people in order though or how long it takes them to notify everyone.

I had a collection of 1849's in that auction. Wish I could have been there. Didn't see your post until too late to contact you.

Weren't the majority of those guns from Texas? One of the guys working there said most of them were from one guy in Texas who had them all stashed in a small room in his house. All of the guns with the lightened mainsprings were his.

I did get mine :) Phew!

I emailed the auction house yesterday from my work e-mail and Jeannie from the auction house e-mailed me back. She said I was successful and I should have recieved my invoice via e-mail by now. So they must have entered my e-mail wrong or something. I'm psyched!!
I will post a thread of it when I get it home.

Thanks to all for your words of encouragement!

twaits,

I don't know about the others but none of mine had lightened springs. I also don't know about being stashed in a small room. Mine had been in my safe for 25 or more years (I guess you could say that was "stashed in a small room" but it doesn't seem quite as eccentric;)). The lots were: 2145, 2241 through 2265.

I looked at your stuff. Nice guns! The guns I mentioned with the lightened mainsprings were all in the Poulin auction. Not the high end stuff that was in the Julia house. It was all great though as far as I'm concerned :)
