i have come to the conclusion that it is the only way to thoroughly clean a rifle bore. what say you?

Its very thorough as is Sweets but I would not use either on a regular basis.

I think you can get carried away cleaning and do more harm than good. Solvents, sturdy brushes and a proper fittings jag usually do just fine for me. I have both the JB bore cleaning compound and their finishing compound and don't have to resort to them very often. I leisurely clean rifles over several day and let the solvents do their job, so I don't have to work as hard.
 
JB's is great, BUT it is also an abrasive. (mild, but still abrasive). It will eat away steel given enough time.
 
JB bore paste works well when needed. I've had episodes where it was very necessary, along with Sweets & Lewis etc.

I found by changing my load recipe in some appropriate way I could avoid most of the instances where those remedies were required.
