My two Basset hounds are getting to be old men now. Jed & Cooper are both about 12 years old. Knowing that Bassets have an average life expectancy of 12-14 years, I take every ailment more & more seriously.

Jed has had bouts of joint problems that are usually helped by Condroitin. Well, this weekend, he seemed to be favoring his back legs more than usual. The Condroitin didn't do any good & in fact he started limping significantly on his left front leg too. He had great difficulty is getting up this AM. My old man was suffering. I took him to the vet this afternoon. Frankly, due to the sudden onset and seriousness of the symptoms, I figured this was going to be a one way trip for him. He is now on prescription meds for the his arthritis and the associated pain. He took a much needed siesta in the sun this afternoon (Thank you Tramidol!)

We'll see..........

Pain management is usually the most important part of extending a geriatric dog's life. That and love keeps their will to live going. It's hard watching them go downhill, I try to make mine happy every day. Hopefully you've still got a couple of good years with yours.

Great looking old fella! prayers sent for healing.
I currently have basset hounds #3-5. numbers 1 and 2 lived to 11 and 5 sadly, so your guys are doing better than I have. The key to long arthritis free lives is weight control and not letting them jump up as young dogs. it causes all kinds of problems later in life. I love my 3 dearly but they are a handful. high maintenance and stubborn. two girls 2.5 and 9 and a 2.5 male. My pack is praying for your pack.

You are a lucky man to have had the companionship of such a noble animal for so long a time. I hope you have much more time together.

So many people never understand that dogs typically give us much more than we can ever give them back in return.

I am thinking of you and your dog, Jed. As someone else mentions, pain management can be critical. And dogs are like people...sometimes you have to try different meds. There is also laser therapy. My own vet uses laser therapy, and I have seen positive results on older dogs with joint problems.

But I guess my point is, don't give up hope yet. Jed will tell you what to do.

Thank you!!! The meds are helping some. But, he still needs help to get up after lying down for an extended period of time. Once he is on his feet, he is mobile under his own power. This is only slightly better than it was.... :(

P.S.,
Those are beautiful hounds!!!! What are their names?

Here's my "pack" Jed (in healthier days), Cooper, and Champ ( a Golden Chow mix!!)

I know it's hard on you watching Jed have problems, but sometimes arthritis and joint meds take a while to take effect. It may even take a change in the dose, or even a different med. Is he on Tramadol for pain? Your patience and love can go a long way towards healing. I'm hoping for the best for you and your Best Friend.

Thank you for your comments!! Yes. The Tramadol does seem to ease the pain.

They are indeed. Not particularly smart but thats OK. Mine do not have a rabbit kill to date but combined we have a baby squirrel, a couple birds and a captured box turtle. Yep, my old girl came up on the deck one day with something big in her mouth. She dropped it at my feet on the deck, CLUNK. What the heck??? a turtle the size of a small cantlope. Poor thing had to be terrorized being carried around in a basset hounds mouth. I have no idea where she found it. I let it go back into the wood. crazy.
