Hi:
Penny' friends from California wanted to see Gatlenburg (Tennessee).
On the way back Bears was sighted. One of the visitors bailed out of the our stopped car, and with camera in hand, ran right up to a Mommy Bear with three Cubs !! This was not bad enough, a 10 year old girl was following the friend !! Luckily the little girl's Mother grabbed the girl back. The Good Lord was watching over Fools and Idiots (Again) at this time. "All Well That Ends Well"??
I have been looking for a dark hair on my head, but they are all grey now.
Jimmy

Your lucky friend valued that close up far more than it would be worth. People have been conditioned by cute little bear toys and photos to think that they are almost like pets. Fortunate for him that he didn't get between mom and her cubs or there would have been carnage.

Eww doggies!!! That could have turned plumb ugly right quick.
The Big Trail Boss was watchin' over them folks.

I know it is wrong, very wrong and bad of me, but sometimes I think they should build a fence around California, at least the southern half, and keep them inside the fence. I am ashamed for thinking such thoughts.

I call that the Disney Syndrome. Terribly dangerous in that case, but always ultimately bad for the animals.

A couple of my "animal lover" neighbors used to put out cooked chicken bones for foxes living behind our apartment complex. I told one of them they could easily splinter and kill any animal that got hold of the bones--I had to take them away from my dog more than once--and she said, "But they eat little animals, and they have bones!" The foxes, being intelligent and opportunistic, came to depend on being fed human food that they weren't designed to eat, and on several occasions demanded it.

It's sad what people like that do to animals they think they're being nice to. I'm afraid I can have little sympathy for idiots who become casualties in those bear encounters.

Your friend was lucky. Years ago people would feed the bears and stop at rest stops with trash cans to watch the bears go through the cans. Too many problems.

Park decided to take the bears deeper into the woods to avoid contact with people. Seems they've come back. One of our friends recently took a trip through Cade's Cove and saw 10 black bears. Too bad people just can't watch the bears from the car. Gotta get out and feed and play around.

I'm reminded of that old Gary Larsen cartoon where two boys are tossing a grizzly cub back & forth, & in the distance you can see the grizzly sow headed full bore in their direction. The caption was "And the Johnson brothers were never heard from again!".:D
