JM Checkered Grips

Wondering if anyone has had experience with these.

I've had smooth ones on several revolvers (original Mountain Gun, 66 no dash, and 17 (-10 I believe, 6", full lug, 10 shot, aluminum cylinder). I like them a lot, particularly as they encourage me to take a high grip, aiding rapid fire, fit my hand and are relatively low profile.

I'm considering the checkered ones for a 686 Plus Pro and perhaps, a Governor, for a little less slip under recoil.

Would certainly be an improvement over the slick ones.
My 625 came with those and it was like holding a bar of soap.
I'm no Jerry, that's for sure.

Me, neither Miculek says he likes them smooth to make it easy to adjust his grip if he misses a perfect hand placement on draw. I understand his point, but I'm not quite as concerned as he is, given my limited exhibition shooting (none)!

Not only does he like them smooth, he powders his hands when he shoots to make them more slippery!

I've been shopping for a set of JM grips also, so I'm curious...

I have a set (smooth) on both my 625 & 627 and I shoot them in IDPA and USPSA. I prefer these over the rubber houges and actually like them

But grips are like shoes, what fits me may not fit you.

Not sure what you're asking. Most of the guns that you mention are K/L or N square butt frames, but the 625JM is a rb N frame. Are you wanting opinions on smooth versus checkered grips? If that's the case, go with a set of Hogue rubber grips. For $25 or less you can't go wrong. If I missed you question, I apologize...

I completely agree. My 625JM grips lasted one trip to the range and were replaced with Hogue rubber. My shooting immediately improved and the factory wood was relegated to the same box as all my other factory wood.

I like the smooth JM grips on my Model 17. There's no recoil, so the lack of checkering isn't a factor.

My first question to you is . . . How much slip under recoil are you currently experiencing?

I like the look of a checkered grip, however more of my revolver grips are uncheckered, probably a ration 3-1. In terms of grips I have purchased (all manufacturers combined) for my revolvers, probably less than 1 in 10 are checkered

ALL of my JM grips are uncheckered, however I think that checkered one that TAROMAN posted is very attractive

Toad, all the revolvers I mentioned are RB other than the 66 no dash. I am asking about checkered vs smooth JMs. The Hogues synthetics are comfortable but tend to move my grip down the frame.

The "slip" is really a twist that cumulatively over a few full-house magnum shots results in me resetting my grip. No problem with .44 Special in the Mountain Gun or .38 Special in the 66 with the smooth grips.

The 6" 17 with smooth JMs is my favorite revolver to shoot; I'm hoping the 686 Plus Pro will give it some competition.

You have to shake hands with Jerry to understand the grip and strength he has. He does not try to over power you; you just know why he can use a smooth grip on his revolvers.

Jordan's grips were also smooth. And recoil reducers.

I have checkered JM grips on my 625-8 and like them. They are non-slip and they expose the backstrap which gives me the room I need to get a good purchase on the trigger. Otherwise the 625 N frame would be a bit too big for my hands. (Taroman's photo above shows the backstrap covered with wood. That's not the case with the JM grips on my 625-8.)

I consider myself fortunate in meeting Jerry at the SHOT show years ago..and there was no line ! Paws, or at least very large hands, and I wear XL gloves. Super nice guy
