As part of our display at the 50th SWCA Symposium in Tuls, my son (SAFireman) and I tried to tell a little of the John Jovino Company history and the story of the Jovino "Effector". Between us we have been fortunate to collect 5 "Effectors": two in 45acp, one each isn 45 Colt, 41 magnum and 44 magnum.

EXTREMELY well done display!

What a great display and story about John Jovino...well done...

A couple of questions please:

In the 4th picture there is a card with the name of Mansfield, Ohio above an Ashland Shooters Supply revolver...what is the significance of this? I live near Mansfield and Ashland, Ohio...

My 2nd question: in "The Jovino Effector Story" mention is made of a Lou Imperato (John Jovino's son-in-law)...do you know if he is possibly related to Anthony Imperato the Founder and President of Henry Firearms?

Thanks again for a GREAT story...Roger

Thanks Roger!

The label with "Ashland" on it is for a limited run of 3" model 66's. Ashland was a Smith & Wesson distributor.

There was another section in that display with distributor specials. The Ashland 66-2 3" is VERY special. It is also pictured in another thread with a slew of 3" 66's (all variants).

As Scott mentions above, out display was dedicated to collecting
specific distributors who have had an impact on S&W designs. At the far end of the display was a section on Wolf & Klar of Ft. Worth, Texas, who really pushed the creation of the 3rd Model 44. In the middle were distributors like Lew Horton and Ashland.

Lou Imperato was the son of Anthony if my memory serve me.

Interesting read. The Imperatos bought the John Jovino Gun Shop in the early '20s and kept the name, and they are the same family that owns Henry Repeating Arms. I've never seen anything about Lou Imperato being John Jovino's son-in-law. In fact, I don't recall ever seeing any mention of John Jovino anywhere after he sold his store.

That information was taken from contemporary newspaper clippings. If I can find a scan off that clipping, I will add it. Thanks

Mansfield, Ohio?

I am familiar with "Ashland Shooters Supply"...they were a distributor of Smith and Wesson's located not very far from where I now live...any info on the significance of the card right above that reading "Mansfield, Ohio?"... Thanks for the info...Roger

Interesting that Lou Imperato started the Effector project with some of the reported 1000 Model 25-2's that had the mis-marked .45 Cal. Model 1950 barrels. I wonder how many that "large number" entailed ?

I have one of the mis-marked guns that shipped in November of 1976 in the serial number range in the mid N338,000's.The time frame for the purchase from S&W seems about right. Are any of the known true Effectors numbered anywhere near that ?

The mis-marked 25-2's aren't rare of even very scarce but I wonder how many of the estimated 1000 still exist as shipped ? Has anyone checked the S&W shipping records to see if an invoice or invoices for that "large number at a steep discount" to Jovino exists ?

Roger,

That card was indicating the gun from Ashland Shooters Supply, in Mansfield, OH. IIRC, we only had the one 3" 66-2 from Ashland on the table during the symposium. Each distributor's section had a black card with gold letters as the header for their section.

Lou Imperato is Anthony Imperato's father. Here is a picture of Lou and Anthony inspecting what appear to be 3rd gen Signature Series Colts at their Colt Blackpowder factory in Brooklyn, New York City.

This story of Lou Imperato's relation to John Jovino was relayed by the gunsmith that worked on site at Jovino's storefront at it's original Centre St. location.

Has there ever been a definitive list of Effector serial numbers published? Or is a letter showing shipping to Jovino’s the only real way to “prove it”?
