Big Jim McClain was on the Inspiration Channel tonight, I'm watching it on DVR right now. It's not shown very often . John Wayne and James Arness fighting Communist. You know the bad guys don't stand a chance against those two.
John Wayne made so many films that it seems like there is one to suit any mood. While he is the quintessential cowboy, I really like his military movies too. Sands of Iwo Jima, In Harms Way, and Flying Tigers are some of my favorites. The Green Berets in another favorite; despite its problems I enjoy the unique subject matter on the early days of Special Forces. Seeing The Duke dressed in Tiger Stripes with an M16 is iconic, and it also makes me realize just how old the AR-15 is now.
However, the westerns showed off his true acting range. For example, in McLintock! he was quite funny; in The Searchers he was far more sinister. El Dorado is one of favorites because of how fun it is. Seeing John Wayne and Robert Mitchum work together is just plain awesome. That combination of masculinity might be too much for modern audiences!
Watched The Train Robbers the other night, Ann Margaret was the woman. Maybe not the best Duke movie but lots of action and any movie with Ann is worth watching, JMHO.
IIRC tonight INSP is showing Island in the Sky. He's got quite a cast of great actors helping him. Lloyd Nolan, James Arness (again!), Andy Devine, Harry Carey Jr, Regis Toomey, Paul Fix, Fess Parker (uncredited), Carl Switzer (who?), Mike Connors.
Both of his movies made from Earnest K. Gann books (this and No Highway in the Sky) were outstanding.
