This post is in response to the "truth is stranger than fiction" idea in the Nazi werewolf movie thread. But it seemed disrespectful to put it there. And maybe more members will see it here.
Joseph Beyrle was a Catholic kid who grew up in Muskegon Michigan whose plans to attend Notre Dame were derailed by World War 2. He joined the Army, became a paratrooper, and parachuted into France hours before the main force landed on Omaha and Utah beaches.
Trained in demolitions, he carried out his mission before being captured by the Germans. Taken to a prisoner of war camp, he taught himself German and escaped.
Trying to reach the Russians (who were closer to his camp) he bluffed his way through a Berlin train station. He found the Red Army, and joined a Tank Squadron commanded by a female officer. He taught himself Russian and performed useful duties for his new unit as they fought their way to Berlin.
Returned to US forces once contact was made in the last days of the war... HE JUST WENT HOME AND WORKED AT BRUNSWICK FOR 30 YEARS, until he was invited to the White House 50 YEARS LATER to be recognised by both the US and Russian Presidents.
