I am amazed that a combined Air and Sea attack on a research vessel didn't sink it in One pass! The Israelis do pretty good on the sand, they just aren't used to water fighting!

My brother was aboard the Liberty during the attack. Received the Purple Heart. Battled alcoholism ever since. Sober 40 years. Appears in the photos in the book about it. Still can't get him to go to the VA for help.

did recv. a check. One was an officer the other enlisted man and they
were told not to talk about the attack. From the info I saw and what
little I heard, my opinion, it was a deliberate attack. And then a year
and a half later, the North Koreans took the Pueblo. By the time I
was in the group in 69 the Liberty class ships were on the way out.
In both cases the Govt. dropped the ball in responding to the attacks.

Thanks for the reminder. The incredible bravery and seamanship displayed by the crew of the USS Liberty has earned it's place in history.
Unfortunately, history is ineffective at informing rear-echelon planners to keep non-combatants away from war zones. The Liberty's Captain, William L. McGonagle, knew his ship would be at risk in the midst of a war, and asked for a Destroyer escort at the outbreak of hostilities, but that request was denied by Admiral Martin at Headquarters.
The Medal of Honor was presented to the Captain, in secret, at the Washington Navy Yard by the Secretary of the Navy, rather than at the White House by the President. This is the only time a Medal of Honor recipient was awarded in such a manner.
