Hello All,

I am new to this forum and was referred here by another site. I just picked up my first S&W Revolver, a 66-2 that appears to be new unfired. I was hoping someone could get me info on it. It is serial AEDXXXX. I was told it was a police force parade and funeral gun....it looks very unused.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum!

What kind of information are you looking for? There's tons and tons of info on 66's and we probably do better at answering more specific questions.

I can tell you that you have a fine .357 magnum shipped in the mid to late 1984 time frame.

Oh yeah, like your avatar.

Thanks, that is my silly crazy German Shep. Cramer.....he is a handful!

I was hoping to get the exact date of manufacture and if possible, find out if it was in fact purchased by a police department (not sure if that is known).

Thanks, I look forward to being a part of this forum!

Do you have the box? Spec order codes have a julian date in them.

You will have to letter the revolver through S&W to find out exactly when and where it was shipped. Even if it was purchased by a police department, it may have gone through a distributor.

Yes I have the box......The Spec. Ord. number is 4432. There is also a Product Code: 102702 and another number under the serial number that is 0662092523....does that help?

Aahhh.... I think I'm wrong here because there aren't 432 days in the year. I have a box with "3615" and there aren't 615 days either.

Gents, is it in the upper left corner and not the "Spec. Ord"?

I'm going to guess that since your 66-2 is prod code 102702 it is a 2-1/2" with a red ramp front sight (but not a white outline rear sight?) and it weighs 30.5oz.

Yes to everything you said......exactly. Any idea on the date of manufacture?

Since I was wrong about the Spec Ord.... Are there four digits in the upper left of the label? Should start with a 4.

Not 4 digits, but three....."229"???? Here is a pic of the box.

Maybe I was right to begin with. You Spec Ord is 4132 which would be May 12, 1984.

But, I still have one with "3615"... (Oh wait, features are "Special" so all bets are off in regards to Spec Ord being the Julian date.)

That would be right about the end of my Junior year of high school!!!! I was hoping it would be 1985, my graduation year but still good as the gun looks pretty new.

Thanks for all of your help, I appreciate it.

My pleasure! I love 2-1/2" 19's and 66's.

Enjoy! I you decide to get it lettered, make sure you let us know what else you found out.

132'nd day of 1984. Enjoy it! Page 401 of the 3rd edition of SC of SW says "Each box end label is marked with a Julian date (example 0212 is the 212th day of 2000)."

Sounds like May 12, 1984 is in fact the date, thanks for that confirmation!
