I just bought a M&P Sport II. Had been looking around and where I am at, I found the best price I could. Looking at this forum, I may have been able to get a better deal, but alas, I now have the gun.

I will be looking through the forum for hints.

First thing I will be looking for is a cleaning kit. Second thing is trying to recall how to clean it once I get the kit.

It has been way too long since I fired and cleaned one of these.

Once thing I know that I will want to get is some sort of optics and again will be haunting the forum on what to get.

Looking forward to many new experiences with this gun.

Congrats on the new gun! I bought the J. Dewey cleaning rod along with a jag and several brushes. It's a very nice cleaning rod. I already had the cleaning kit.

Next thing you need to do is email your congressman and senators and tell the second ammendment is not negotiable or otherwise they may be coming to confiscate your nice new rifle soon.

I suggest getting a cleaning rod guide and link to hold the upper to the lower while cleaning. I've seen way too many guns over the years that have muzzles that are egg shaped from someone using a cleaning rod like they were churning butter.

Welcome aboard and congrats!

If you're ok with the price you paid, then you're good. No crying over spilled milk my friend. You found the lowest price in your local market. That's a good thing.

Here's a link to a cleaning tool thread I started years back.

You want to know what I use on my .223/5.56 modern sporting rifle today?

  • Boresnake
  • Breakfree CLP
  • A rod long enough to reach the chamber.
  • AR-15 chamber brush.

The only other tool I advocate is the CAT-M4 Bolt / Bolt carrier cleaning tool. It really does save time.

Decide what your primary use will be, and that will help us give you suggestions on what to buy. Also if you're willing, let us know the condition of your eyesight. Do you wear corrective lenses? Do you wear bi-focals? Do you have an astigmatism?

Whew!

JaPes,

Thanks for all the info.

Where I bought the gun, there are no returns, so I got it for better or worse, unless I decided to sell it.

Excellent link: (http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-w...use-clean.html). Looking here, I need to start saving up. I knew that buying the gun was just the beginning, but I do not think I was quite ready for the cleaning kit costs.

This info: (Not sure how to quote yet) is a good start, thanks.

My eyesight. I use bifocals and do have an astigmatism.

My use, some plinking but mostly self defense so once sighted in, I probably will not plink that much. lol ;)

I have already been looking at some of the red dot sighting devices. I looked through one at the store and was not initially impressed. After I shoot this thing a little bit, I will have a better idea I think.

MichiganScott,

The cleaning rod guide I am sort of confused on. Could be I just need to keep on reading and watching youtube videos.

You do not need a bore guide if you plan on using a bore snake. I only use rods with a gun cradle for cleaning because they do a superior job. I know a lot of shooters love the bore snake, but I've read about way too many people getting them stuck by doing something stupid. I shot competition for years so my definition of a clean bore may be different from others.

I use a Mil-spec cleaning kit I snatched when I left the service in 1970. Breaks down into a pouch and is handy, robust and easy to carry into the field.
Clean my M&P 15 T with it and it does a fine job.

Actually, the Mil-Spec kit is what I was thinking about getting. I probably will not be able to get an actual issue version unless I happen to get lucky at the flea market.

Or..... enlist in the marines and steal one like paragain did. :D

If you are considering a red dot or holographic sight, I highly recommend that if possible you look through a few of them. With an astigmatism, the dot can appear squished, to be a comma, or starburst on you. Best to find out how your eye will perceive the dot before you put down some hard earned cash for one.

IMO, put a Nikon P223 scope on it and call it a day.

Indeed. One of the most stupid things I've encountered is not inspecting the boresnake for frays and wear. They think it will last forever, and keep on pulling it through even if it's worn. *Snap*

Boresnakes can be cleaned. They can be reused. After a while, they need to be replaced.

Get the Otis flexible rod kit.

You don't need all that fancy-schmancy cleaning stuff! Just pull the pin and separate the upper and lower, and stick 'em in the dishwasher with the dish washing detergent, and squirt some Jet Dry in there so you don't get water spots, and you're good to go. Just don't use the auto dry unless you want a melted stock...

;)

I phoned around town today and the lowest price I found at local gun stores (didn't phone Walmart) was $629 at Quantico Tactical. Some stores wanted $699, and one wanted MSRP!

My local dealer here in the Tulsa area has the Sport II for $600 out the door. He had 11 yesterday. Not a bad price if you are willing to make the drive.

I have astigmatism too and I bought a TR-25 red dot. It looked horrible but I figured out it was just my eyes, so I sent it back. I bought a vortex spitfire 1x prism scope to replace it and it is amazing. Even without illumination on there is a black DRT reticle etched into the glass, and there is both red and green illumination.
