I picked up my 627PC 2.5" UDR last month. Started thinking, thanks to Stainz getting a second M627, that it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a set myself. So instead of getting another 627 I decided to go with a M629PC .44M in 2.5". This way I would have twin sons with different mothers:eek:! They finally got one in Bud's yesterday and I actually got thru on the phones and got it secured! So after the usual wait on the shipping and the 10 day FFL background check here in CA. I will have a nice set of UDR Performance Center Revolvers. Hope the 44's front sight is lined up, as the 357's wasn't and I had to use a dowel to move it a bit into position. My grips were perfect on it and hope the .44's are good as well, and I don't have the problem with the gaps as Stainz had. I will keep you updated and thanks to Stainz for giving me the idea to expand the "Family"!

Thanks, I waited for one to become available for quite awhile. I wonder how many the S&W Performance Center puts out in their production runs of these models. They sure don't last very long when the do come out for sale. I think the M629 was the only one Bud's got in yesterday and I was just really lucky to be online there when it popped up. It was about the same with my M627 waited more than a month on that one, maybe two months. I guess they are one hot item!!

They wouldn't sell it to you if it wasn't on the CA list, would they? Wow, I hope you get it okay! I'm looking forward to your extended family photo. I love my pair - they really are a value. I have a 'range kit' and a 'bedside kit' in the mail to me from 5 Star. That's two 8x speedloaders and an 8 by 8 loading plate and another speedloader with a 2 by 8 loading plate - total, with free s/h, was $101.50. That - and last week's 50 R-P moonclips - have cleaned out my coffers of my mad money and gun sale funds. It was fun while it lasted. Hope you get your .44 UDR okay.

Guys, give these guns their due.
They are not 2.5", they are 2.625".
Just messin' with you (but they are 2.625" :)

Does anyone know why this odd fraction?

I've had mine since August, and it's become one of my most favorite guns. They did a great job designing this one.

The 629-6 2.5 Stainless is the M629PC on the CA DOJ Certified List

Before I bought the gun I checked with the CA DOJ list and spotted the 2.5" model 629-6 being good to buy until 06-21-2011. Being that the 629PC .44 Magnum is the only .44 Magnum offered by the factory in the 2.5" (2.625) barrel I contacted Smith & Wesson Factory and gave them the SKU#170135 and the model. I got a reply from a Mr. Wayne Goodwin at the factory stating: Sir, SKU#170135 should be CA Compliant. Thank you

So I waited and then one popped up at Bud's and I bought it. The 629-6 2.5" model on the CA DOJ website is located toward the bottom of the .44Mag section and is good until 06-21-2011, and the PC model is a 629-6. So I hope this helps with anyone's questions you might have of it being on the CA list.
Thanks,

It is on the list as a 629-6 2.5" Stainless, the 629PC is the only one offered in that barrel size in .44 Mag from the factory and the DOJ list. The factory said it was good to go in CA.

The 629 UDR is 2.625" long, not 2.5". the 2.5" 629-6 on the DOJ list is the Backpacker model with the bear paws on the cylinder.

Please note how the 627 UDR is on the list as 2.625" long, not 2.5".

Backpacker Model #150165 has been discontinued

The 629 UDR is 2.625" long, not 2.5". the 2.5" 629-6 on the DOJ list is the Backpacker model with the bear paws on the cylinder.

I sent you a PM that the Backpacker model from S&W has been discontinued, and the only .44 2.5" on the DOJ list is the UDR. Bud's lists it and the 627 as 2.5 not 2.625 guess it is rounded off I saw the DOJ on the 627 but it is newly released last month so maybe they were being more specific?? Thanks for the imput.

There are many revolvers on the CA safe list that are not currently in production.

The 625-10 PC that was only made in 2003 is still on there, for example. The 66-6 F Comp, 629 Carry Comp and heck, even the M460 XVR 3.5" are still on there.

The little sister to the 629 UDR, the 627 UDR is on the list. It's barrel length is listed at 2.625" on the CA DOJ list, not 2.5". All 3 UDRs (627, 657, 629) have 2.625" (2 5/8") barrels.

The 629 listed on the CA DOJ list is the 2.5" Backpacker model.

You'll also note in Bud's item description your 629 UDR PC lists the barrel as being 2.62".

It's frustrating, and I don't want to bum you out, but I also don't want to see other list members ordering them because of what they read here and then not being able to DROS them. I have seen a few people on Cal Guns trying to sell guns to people out of state because they've already bought something that wasn't on the list, the seller wouldn't return it, and their FFL wouldn't DROS it.

Rettings in Los Angeles has one, and note they won't sell it to anyone in California, per their item description.

Glad that you found one. I have been looking a them also. I am in the same situation as you are.
Saw a used one (like new) the other day for 750.00. I probably should have jumped on it.
Please post information when you get it and have a chance to shoot it.

Calif must really be a screwed up state as far as what is legal and what is not when it comes to firearms.

Question on the 627.. 629 etc being 2.5" rather than the actual 2.625" barrel. Got out my slide rule & calculator & put on my "Thinkin Cap" Boy, i haven't seen that Cap for the past 100 years. The gun is advertised in a lot of circles as being "2 & 5/8th inch barrel". If you dig further in the History & Math books ... the 2 & 5/8 actually comes out to decimal "2.625 inches". I guess any "bean counter" would know than anyway, but i didn't. It also took me almost a full 6-pack to come up with this.
Carl :)

Smith & Wesson Factory Said California Compliant on the 629PC

Smith and Wesson Factory said the gun is on the CA DOJ list and it CA Compliant. I checked with them to make sure. I see no reason for them to tell me false information on their product, that would make no sense at all. They are the ones who pay to put it on the list so I will take their word for it, and Bud's keeps close track of things too. I had a friend try to get a Taurus Judge from Bud's in CA and the next day he got a call that he can't get it .... not on the list. So between the two of them I feel they both can't be wrong.

Okay, so the 2 1/2" 629 listed on the DOJ list is actually for a 2 5/8" 629 and not for a 2 1/2" (like the Backpacker);and a gun store in Kentucky should know the ins and outs of California's labrynthine gun laws. Got it!

GREAT PURCHASE YOU MADE.
AFTER RETIRING FROM NYPD IN 2002 I Dumped all my semi-auto pistols and only kept and bought "wheel-guns". The unfluted cylinders on the performance center snubbies just do it for me that I bought a 2.5 INCH-7 shot 686 , 2.6 INCH 627 - 8 SHOT-357 MAG., 2.6 INCH 657 6 SHOT- 41 MAG. AND A 629 6 SHOT- 44 MAG. GREAT PRICES ON "GRABAGUN". I HOPE MY WIFE DOESN'T FIND THE COMBO TO MY SAFE.
