I just bought a model 624 sorry no pics yet. It will be a couple of days yet before I pick it up. So here is a little bit of the story! found it at Cabelas asked to see it. Opened the cylinder checked the SR# AHB98xx my memory said this one is ok from the recall.
finished checking the rest of the details cylinder lock up bore ect. all checked fine. Did not appear to have been used much bad news rubber grips no box ect. just the gun. Told the sales clerk let's write it up and make the deal. I get home and then start to think do I remember correctly SR# range correctly? So I get on the Forum and do a search, found many old threads on this subject and the SR# ranges on the recall. There was also several post on contacting Kate Fredette that she has the answers to clear or not. So this morning I decided to e-mail her about this 624 at 5:30 am and by 10:41 am she had responded. Confirmed it was not part of the recall my memory was correct. Now all this rambling is about 2 things! since joining this Forum I have learned so many things shared by many people willing to do so. That is what makes this Forum so great and why I am proud to be a member. The other is I can not say enough for how fast the response was from Kate Fredette from Smith & Wesson hats off to her and Smith & Wesson. Just to get back to the 624 it has been on my short list for some time, I will need to update with pics and range time.

Thanks Rusty

Congrats! You will love the .44, it's a sweetheart.

Congrats on the 624. You now have both of the hardest to find of the Model 24-3 and 624 series from the 1980s. For some reason S&W made way fewer 4" than 6 1/2" barrels.

You will love your 624! Mine is a 3" and it is one of my favorites. Very accurate with a 250 grain SWC home cast over 7 grains of Unique. I use Pach's on it for the range and woods carry.

Cheers

Rick

UPDATED WITH PICS

Here are a couple of pics. Just picked this up last night it was late by the time I got here cleaned up. So the pics are quick also changed out the grips. The rubbers that were on it one piece presentation grips were so dry they just cracked. Had a hard time getting them off put on a set of bonded ivory grips I had. It was pretty dirty, took quite a bit of elbow grease to get it to this point. Will take it to the range later today.

Thanks Rusty

UDATED PICS RANGE REPORT

Well here are a few pics of the 624 and 24-3. I will say they could be better, not sure what is up with my camera need to look into it. Went to the range last weekend and tested it out with some 200 gr. rnfp and 240 gr. swc. over some Accurate # 5. Set up out at appx. 15 yrds. shot double action, single action had to make a few adjustments to the rear sight. Both shot well but the 240 gr. swc seemed to be better. Single action is smooth and crisp, double action pull is not bad smooth as well. I think this is one of best big bore rounds to shoot. It will make many more trips to the range in the future.

Thanks Rusty

I have both bbl lengths of the 24-3 and have found the heavier bullets shoot better than the lighter ones, no matter the speed.

Congratulations the 624 is a wonderful revolver perhaps only exceeded by the model 24. All you need is a set of Kim Ahrends superb stocks and you're set.
