Hey there! I just picked up my second gun, an M&P 15OR. Last year I bought an M&P 15-22 for my first gun and was hooked. I decked out the 15-22 but after firing a friend's Sig M400 I knew I needed a .223/5.56 slinger. I have a couple of TRUGLO red dots so I put one on it but I don't know how well they will hold zero. Any suggestions for a reasonably priced red dot? I was considering a Sightmark Ultra Shot QD but have read mixed reviews.

I have had good luck with the TruGlo's holding zero, but I also have found the red dot to be larger than what was optimal for the rifle. 1MOA dots will allow you to shoot a 6" or 8" target well out to 100 yards (in my opinion) but aren't as good when shooting further distances. I had an UltraDot Pan-A-Vis holographic sight. I have read where people have had good luck with the Sightmark optics. Whatever you get I would suggest a 1MOA or a variable Dot. I have a counterfeit Eotech on one of my Sporting Rifles that I like it has a 1moa dot but if the sun is in just the right position, I recently discovered, the dot can become harder to see.

It will be for recreational/target shooting. Where we shoot now is about 30-50 yards but could eventually be up to 300 yds if we build a backstop. I have a 3X scope already if that happens. If you haven't had any problems with TruGlos maybe I will stick with those fore a while. I have a TruBright on my 15-22 that has 4 reticles, a small dot, a bigger dot, a small dot in circle and a bigger dot in circle. The small dot is tiny and doesn't block out the target. I think I'm going to slap it on th OR for now.

I have a buddy that has a Sight mark...nothing but problems out of it.

I have a Millet Multidot SP that I got on a clearance sale that I have been happy with. Holds zero and was less than $100. We also put a Bushnell TRS-25 on my son's 15-22, and have been happy with it as well.

Red dots from Primary Arms and Vortex Strikefires are also very popular for budget red dots.

Run the TruGlo until it fails (if it ever does). Then take a look at Primary Arms. I have the 30mm and it's done a great job. I'll be getting a Vortex Sparc for my other AR as I've seen great review for it as well and like the profile. I was hoping to get one for my 15-22 when my $29 BSA failed but for some reason, it keeps holding zero and wont die!!!

Are there any nice metal flip up BUIS that don't cost an arm and a leg? I have a set of Magpul's on my 15-22 but I read on another post that when mounted to an OR gas block they can get too hot and melt. I might also put a quad rail handguard on and mount the MBUS's to that.

I have a flip up Iron sight it is an AXC that I like and am putting back on my Homebuilt AR, you can also get one from UTG, JG or I just saw one made by Samurai. If you look on some of the auction websights you can find inexpensive and expensive ones, take your choice just make sure that you get one that is the right height! :D

Did your 15-22 come with the MBUS? If not and you still have the stock 15-22 sights, you can use the front one on your gas block. It's fixed but works well.

I added the MBUS to the 15-22 and still have my stock sights. I might try that next time I go shooting if I haven't got something else by then. There's a gun show coming up in a couple of weeks maybe I can find something there.

When I was debating sights for my .22lr AR, someone asked me, "Why worry about BUIS at all? If it is a range gun / recreational shooter, just put the optic on it and call it good. No need to spend money for BUIS that you won't use."

Of course, I didn't listen and put a set of sights on it, but just thought I would throw it out there for you. If you are going to go with a scope and not have a quick release mount, I wouldn't worry about BUIS. I have them on mine only because I like to shoot with both my red dot and my iron sights.

I put the eotech holographic sight with the 3x magnifier, both are on quick detach mounts. I also have a leupold scope on a quick detach mount I can put on it. The quick detach mounts stay very accurate when put back on. I have been very happy with this setup. I also have a set of troy industries fold down BUIS

Man, that is a nice setup but it's a bit more than I want to spend ( too many other expensive hobbies ;) ). I want to run BUIS so I can set my rifle up for different distances, back up sights for short range, red dot for mid range and my scope for long distance calls.

On my 22lr I put see-thru scope mounts athough I still dont use the irons...LOL

I went thru a bunch of sights and could never seem to hold zero until I got a Hi Viz fiber optic for my AR M&P 15 front sight. Easy to install and very bright and easy to pick up. Wish I had bought one sooner and saved myself some $$ and agrivation
good luck
