I didn't see anything in a search.

Just how bad are the the USRAC lever rifles with the rebounding hammers and tang safeties? It appears they have not problem selling them. Who here likes theirs?

IMO, The mid 80s Brownings are the best and I love my 1895 in 30-40 Krag and I plan on getting an 1886 in 45-70s.

But, the USRAC ones get you into unique models and calibers. For example, the 1886 short rifle in 45-90 is quite intriguing to me.

I can't find the Dave Scoville article on the cure for the the above so I'll have to order a back issue from Wolfe Pubslishing.

It looks like there are cures, such as some outfits that can make that can remove the tang safety, replace the hammer, etc. But, with more money spent, maybe just save for an original. But, 1886 originals are quite a bit.

I have a Japan made Winchester model 1886. I also have an original model 1886, two model 71s, and several model 1892s. That "Limited Edition" Japan made Winchester is absolutly, completely different than an original. I really don't mind the tang safety, but the trigger feels "funky" and the action feels different. I called Doug Turnbull a few years ago, because the trigger/action bothered me so much, and he does convert quite a few back to the "original type action, but for the $700 price I declined. I'll just wait until the prices are up enough then I'm selling my Japan gun. The newer generations probably think they are great, only because they don't know any different.
I've heard and been told the Browning guns are much better.

I have a 1986 manufactured, 1886 Browning in 45-70, 26" of octagonal bliss. I had to take it apart once for detail cleaning! They use coil springs instead of leaf springs, and the hammer looks like a giant 1911 hammer. If John Moses Browning could see one, I'm sure he would approve!

I also had a 2005 manufactured 1886 Winchester 45-90 takedown (1 of 501). I was such a piece of junk! After a few gunsmiths tried to get the lever to cycle without jerking away from my shoulder, I sold it. (I so wanted it to work!)

However my 2005 1885 Winchester Low Wall in 38-55 is fantastic! From a rest I had a 20 shot group as small as a dime!

I have had several newer 94s I took on trades. I never shot them more
than to check function. I didn't see anything wrong with them and have had no complaints on them. I bid on a 1886 Light Carbine with box and
hang tags about 20yrs ago. I let a lot of good deals go by to use my whole
nut to by that rifle. I didn't have a chance, my first bid was $2500 just to
run out the riff raff and bids went up so fast my paddle caught fire. There
were 7 Winchesters in that collection that brought north of $100K and that
was 20yrs ago.

I have an original Winchester 1886 made in 1892 and a Browning 1886 made in 1986. The action of the Winchester is butter smooth. The Browning feels rough and gritty. I'm sure that some hand polishing of the internal parts will cure that.

I have an original Winchester 1892 and two USRAC 1892s; a Model 1892 Deluxe Takedown in .44-40 and a 1892 rifle in .45 Colt. The triggers on the USRAC rifles are heavier than the Winchester. The actions don't feel as smooth as the Winchester, but I'm not complaining.

While we are having some unusual warm weather, I think I'll go to the range tomorrow and do some shooting with the USRAC 1892 in .45 Colt and my USFA Single Action in .45 Colt.

I’ve heard theirs a kit or something to get rid of the rebounding hammer. I have a browning 1886 that comes without that problem, the action in that one is a little rough too but it’s built like a tank. I’ve ran loads in it thst id never run in my marlin cowboy and it just handles them fine.

I have a tang safety 86 and I’ve never had any issues with it. I’ve loaded everything black power cast bullet loads, bird shot, multi round ball loads and maxed jacketed bullet loads. Its digested thousands of round with out a hiccup. While it’s not an original it suits my 86 needs at this time.

I assume you are referring to the Miroku guns. That company has a looooong history of making quality firearms for the Browning name. I have an older Browning 1886 and three late model 1892’s. All Miroku and all excellent build quality. I would dare say they are the highest quality Winchester remakes on the market...better than what New Haven made in the 1980’s and 90’s. That being said I’m yet to handle a Pedersoli.

This guy, in addition to providing a tang sight that will work with the tang safety on the USRAC 1886, can take out the rebounding hammer: Products

The fix works well, the hammer seats properly, but, one can pull through half cock. If the safety is on, pulled through half cock, the gun cannot fire as the pin cannot contact the primer.

So it’s a fix, but not perfect.

I had a USRAC 1886 built by Miroku, and agree it is a high quality gun.

Why not just get a REAL ONE?? Winchester made Lever Guns for so long, there are always plenty of them around for the taking. Yea, you might have to work a little to get just what you want in the condition you want, but the hunt is half the fun! :o Once you get it you will be much happier, IMHO and you will actually have what you desire. It's not like they only made them for 5 years......

I've always done what I have suggested and so far I have not been disappointed! Just be discriminating!

I got new gun because I knew what I was getting. If I find an origianl in the wild around me it’s usually been molested and has a questionable bore and or mechanism. I’m scared to buy one off GB based on what I’ve seen locally. Not to mention everyone seems to want an arm and a leg for one.....with no visible rifling. That’s just me in my area.
